ha ha, good one Tidy Up...

isn't Mister Alan that sober sod that won't drink when in LOS ??

I've known very few Falahng who actually enjoy listening to Thai music, that includes guys that read Thai novels and have been here for decades.

I do enjoy some of the Esahn music that develops into an almost hypnotizing cacaphony, good stuff.

Most Westerners only enjoy the already Westernized stuff like Loso & Kara Boa, and don't tell me you don't like that Nasty, Naughty, Bitchy song from Tata Young...

Matter of fact Tata was the first, maybe the only, Thai artist to tour (singing Thai songs) outside of Asia. I think her first stop was LA, largest Thai community in America.

guess why, there's no market for it, very little outside LOS (Malay, S'Pore), and basically nothing in EU/US...

I know a few Singaporeans and Chinese who dig some Thai pop songs, but not the classical Thai style music.

1. My wife, being a Thai, cannot even imagine to walk 100 meters so, car is a must everytime everywhere.

2. Me being grown up in Venice, I hate driving...long live the BTS, the MRT and the mototaxi....and by the way, driving in Bangkok makes difficult to spot and approach a cute TG walking along Sukhumvit!

that's funny, there are plenty of Thai fems out there walking...even a ton of beautiful ones.

sorry to break the news bro, but your ole lady is what we call hi maintenance...

but I do see your point about meeting chicks on MRT and BTS, plenty of gals
and at least your wife won't see you hitting on them, if she can't even walk to the station...555

Living faaaar away where the action is I'm bound to have my own car, of course it is possible.

I like the relaxed attitude of Thai drivers in BKK. And Caronte: it's easy to let some cuties pop in even at Suk, just stop and push the button. After that you may pop too, but that's another story with another traffic hopefully without lot thit.

Mmmmm..interesting perspectives (apart from the all-too-frequent) attempts to hijack a serious thread to vent some personal arguments - get a room guys!).

Maybe I might invest in a motor after all! No chance of company car, I'm afraid, but I guess I could negotiate some kind of package arrangement.

Has anyone actually shipped a car over to LOS from another country? What experiences do you have of doing that?

Shipping a car here takes a lot of work plus you have to pay all the taxes import tax, excise tax and VAT. Not worth it unless you are have something special. You wil the assistence of a good import lawyer to do all the paperwork properly.

Well TU, technically he could process as "temporary importation" so to avoid paying all the duties and so on, unless he's going to move to LOS forever....

Yes correct, if you are only going to be here for a short time the regulations are more lax. I think the time is between 6 > 12 months max. But don't take my word for it.

Don't even consider shipping a car over. By the time you get it cleared, it will be time to take it out. The excise tax, import duty and VAT can run somewhere in the 380% of assessed valuation range.

If you bring one across the border from Malaysia, you will have to take it back out in 6 months and hope they will let you back in with it. It will be stamped in your passport and you cannot leave without clearing the vehicle from your passport.

I bought my own and drive where required but I live in Pattaya outside the city.

Scobie, my suggestion is to look for a car rental...you will learn that you don't actually need a car 24/7 in Bangkok and very often, driving a car is a damnation...
Rent a car only for the week-end when you plan to visit Pattaya or Hua Hin or meet the family of your BG to impress'em!

I live in BKK for a few months now. I am supposed to buy a car but I do not think I will... BTS is absolutely great. At night, taxi everywhere...

Why should I spend a lot of money buying a car and then spend a lot of time in my car ? BTS is cheap and very fast... Taxi are cheap and everywhere...

If anybody can convince me...

Just depends on the person. Like saying 'why wear an Omega when you can just look at your mobile phone clock?'

Myself, I'd rather not have to ride around with some taxi driver (a complete stranger) in the middle of the night.
