As was said, if you can swing buying a car, it is much better financially in the long run. This is even more true given the financing available from the dealers. To qualify for it, you need a work permit OR a Thai wife to be put in her name (and yours). Even with the interest rates of 3% you end up way ahead in the long run. Cars hold their value very well here as they last longer in this climate. Here are figures for a low end Honda Civic...... You choose Honda City Honda Civic 1.7 A AT Price 763,000 Baht Minimum downpayment 190,750 Baht Interest rate 2.9 % Monthly payment 17,279 Baht/Month Duration 3 Years For a Corolla Altis the numbers are about the same. BTW, the Altis feels like a Lexus both inside and with the ride itself. And it even has good headroom for 6'3" guys like me. So after 3 yrs you have an asset worth maybe 400KB after paying in some 800KB. So it cost you 400K/36 = 11KB/month rather than the lease of 25-30KB/month. Insurance is about 2KB/month. If you can pay cash, all the better.

even better still if u get a 1 year old car, that has less than 7,000 or so kms done and serviced dilligently at authorised places.. let the first owner take the first hefty depreciation..

sorry all, I bought a 16 year old toyota for 120,000, in the company name, thinking of trading up for a mitsu grandis 4+4, 6 years old all option at around 400,000. for 300 to 400k you get a pretty decent car, who are we trying to impress. mant years ago when I had little money and dressed like a khow saner I still got lovely ladies, having a flash car in los just says i've got money stick with me until it's finished.
