Bangna area has a lot of lakes where they have jet-skis, or water skiing, nice day out most of the lakes also have a bar and restaraunt to keep your energy levels up.

If you follow the Sukumvit road out of town towards (a long long way past soi 4!) Samutprakarn, over the Bangna trad, past suam Rong seafood market and shopping centre, on the left hand side you will see a HUGE statue of a 3 headed elephant, must be 100ft tall.

Rama IX park, behind Siri centre on Srinakarin is a huge landscaped park, very peacful and kept very tidy, huge central lake for peddle boats or just feed the fish. Drink as much beer as you want but don't light up?!?!
Big free fireworks display held here on the Kings birthday, also a great place to go get wild on Songkran and on Songkran this provides plenty of helpless animals for the hunt.

Wouldn't recomend any of the above if 'hunting' but surely 24/7 is too much for just hunting.

Anyone been to Koh Kret?  It's an island in the middle of the Chao Phraya river, across from Nonthaburi.

The island's main industry is ceramics/terra cotta, and many products can be purchased dirt cheap.  There is a paved walkway around the island (but be careful, it's longer than you think, and there is no shade, once you get away from the shops/factories).

Funny you should mention that HS, when on an excursion to Koh Kred I got tired of the Thai group activities and decided to walk around the island. I must say it was twice as long as I thought, but I did meet a lot of friendly locals hanging out on their porches on the other side of the island where few visitors stray.

As for recommendations on Odd and Interesting Places in BKK.. Well I've already visited the Siriraj Hospital Forensics Museum.. Creepy place if you ask me, but at least it's free.

Can't think of any good new ones right now. Will come back to this thread later.

Yep, we did the same thing - walked WAY around the island, and got lost on the interior road.  The good part was that my 'good' TG put her head on my shoulder for the first time on the way home on the boat. (she was TIRED!)  A nice farang couple asked me if we were married...

I have a nice windchime on the ceiling above me as I type - 25 baht in Koh Kret!

It's little stuff like this that gets me through these times in farangland...

Wat made of Beer Bottles.

This Wat only took two roundtables to get enough material to build. 5555!

WOW....weird Wat ....LOL ...when do they start building another one?I m pretty sure we can help

Now my turn to try to describe one of the "weird" place i saw...
It is somewhere in Ayathaya, in the parc of one of the Wat (ok..there are many but i cant remember the name)
There is this sort of Altar where people beleive that there is the "spirit/gost" of a dead kid...they go there and give some toys to whorship it, andthen they do this "divination" with those sticks...
Using Winny The poo as an offering on an Animist altar...i LOVE this idea LOL
Best thing is that regularly(i mean when you cant see the Altar any longer) the monks go and give the toys to a local orphanage...
some pics here:

Haam Sup,

Great idea.  This thread deserves to grow into a major resource.  Have already picked up good tips here to try.

So in return here's a few of my own favorites, not so odd, but hopefully interesting diversions outside the regular go-go/bar scene:

Travel from BKK to Chiang Mai via First Class (AC) Private Sleeper Compartment on train.   Leaves BKK about  7pm and arrives for breakfast.  Must be done with traveling companion.  Cost for both is same as hotel for the night so you get accommodations AND travel for the price of one.   Doing it on a sleeper car adds another notch to your 'interesting places done...' - if you're keeping track.  Train rocks you gently to sleep after.

A Dinner Cruise is not an unusual event but it is a real treat for two - or a group - if you haven't already tried it.  Large ship with dance band works best for me.  Eating Thai food, drinking and dancing with TG as the lights along the Chao Phraya go by.  It doesn't get much better.

Candlelight dining on the outdoor patio of the Oriental, overlooking the Chao Phraya - with nice background music by trio. Nice.

Traditional Thai dinner/dance show, but ONLY the one hosted by the Oriental, just across the River from it, ferry provided.  Lots of similar touristy shows, but you and TG will remember this one.

I particularly like good music, and checking the BKK Post entertainment section before the weekend yields all kinds of outstanding and even world class events - at BKK Cultural Center, Goethe House, major hotels, etc.  Asian and Western music and dance groups, concerts, musical plays - whatever suits you.

As mentioned on another post - please forgive repetition: if your TG doesn't have a nice dress handy for a dress-up affair just stop at some place like the Pratunam market and let her pick out a nice long frilly black dress for only 200-300 Baht.  TGs dress up incredibly also.

The Bangkok Dance Club holds gala quarterly big-band dances at Dusit Thani, outsiders welcome.  Nice dress-up affair.   They have dance lessons at Lumpini Park on day prior.  Nice thing to do with TG if it happens while you're there.

Groovy (Map n' Guide sponsored) Sky Train Pub Crawl.  New faces and places. (Hey, why not a 'BKK Tonite Pub Crawl' - yes it is already being done (highly informal fun times - 24/7 even) - but suggesting possible regular event in addition to RT.)

Visit the Eraswan Shrine, on the corner adjoining Grand Hyatt Erawan.  Calm place for throngs of Buddhist worshippers in midst of BKK chaos.  Traditional Thai rituals, dance, & music in one nice little spot.  Participate in the ritual routine with your TG and get your head into it.  Pleasant break.

Could go on and on.

Love LOS.

Thin White Duke
One of my favorite places in Bangkok, aside from Thermae Cafe',(ok, a collective yuk., from the highbrow section), is the temple of the Golden Buddha.

Though I don't know the name of the wat, (There is a Thai name), it's one of the most beautiful Buddha images I've ever seen. And there is a nice story behind it.

This Buddha image stands, (actually sits), about 10feet high, and is solid gold. The room Buddha resides in is smallish, and the whole room glows. It's very cool. Never seen so much gold in my life.

Apparently during WWII the monks buried it in the backyard so the Japanese would'nt' get to it. Apparently it was encased in plaster and not unearthed for a long time. Anyway, my tour book is at home, and maybe someone else has additional information. Besides the blessed prayer beads, It's a very cool place to visit, and well worth the taxi ride.
