Yup, you're overpaying.
But if I had a live in maid, I'd rather have a happy one than one I could not trust!
Don't even sweat about the errands she runs for you. In a Thai household they are supposed to do everything from cook, clean, to running errands. Anything asked basically. Even helping the neighbors.
As for wages, I hear anything from 2k to 5k, and once in awhile 6k.
Disgustingly enough the 2k is from a Thai I know who is hi-so, very well off with several houses. She came in the office bragging that she's got a new maid and so cheap for 2k. A Cambodian who I'm sure is not working legally.
Grrrrrr. She always rubbed me the wrong way now I really knew why!

Mate it is really a matter of what you want to pay. We have a hilltribe bitch and we pay her 5,500 + food. Sexy body, nice smile, but f***ed up teeth. They mustn't have toothpaste up there.
We also have an English speaking nanny from Nepal/Myanmar that we pay 12,000 for. She is a lazy pain in the as so we are going to fire her. Wonder if she reasds this forum? Probably not.
My advise is to get a nice, young Cambodian/Burmese/Thai hilltribe that is single and walk around with alluring outfits until she can't stand it anymore and drops to her knees to gobble your stones.

they do (usually) speak good Thai or at least issan-lao :p
yeah 5k seems the going live in rate still - not bad (for them) as their previous job is likely to be at a factory at ~4k or less & much much less comforts ^^
