Time and effort would be better spent on advice on how to set up a gig in the west that would let one spend more time in Asia, than crying how life is soo unfair.

^ agree.

I bet a lot of those dot commers who pretty much became very comfortable overnight (for doing relatively little) are some prime candidates to enjoy life the way it should be enjoyed in the LOS now.    (company now bankrupt, but plenty of cashed in stock in the bank)

It's a stupid article written by a loser. LOSER.

I have lived in BAngkok for fufteen years. I came here with $2000 and the clothes on my back expecting to do a scouting trip and go back to USA before returning for good if I liked what I saw. I liked what I saw so much I never went back.

After the expected year of drunken excess, I settled down, fell in with a Thai arms dealer (same background as me), and went to work as agent for Stoner (USA), Santa Varbara (Spain) and DENEL (S.Africa) also Paraflite Parachutes. Six years later the DEA took him away and I found out he had a business I knew nothing about...welcome to the LOS. Sadder but wiser I picked myself up and worked for a broadcast electronics importer for 18 months as manager of their broadcast division selling to the Army owned TV stations mostly. The company was/is owned by a Chinese Thai women and we never got along, so I quit when she came under suspicion of masterminding the murder of the Director General of the Mass Communications Authority...seemed like a good time to go. Then became Intl Affairs director for an international law firm, and got involved in selling body armor from USA to the Thai police. Started the Dungeon (CJ) six years ago, and three years ago got into spoecialty liquor business, eventually to discover that the moinopoly on booze in Thailand is alive and well, so must do the last one across the river in Vientiene, Laos.

NEVER have I been disadvantaged by being a farang. It was not hard to obtain and maintain long visa, work permit, etc. 90% of the time Thais bend over backwards to HELP farang, and that's the truth.

YES you must be able to have the right connections or make friends who do, fast. BE CAREFUL WHO YOU MAKE FRIENDS WITH is my advice, see above!

I make about $100,000 US free and clear these days (and for the last 5 years) and that's good money in Thailand. I have invested about the same in the startup of the liquor business but if that flies I'll be "f_ck you" rich as we say, which is to say rich enough to tell (almost) anyone "f_ck you".

Some LOSER whining about why the deck is stacked against him in Thailand, does not impress me at all. If you have guts, brains, and balls, Thailand is still a land of opportunity.

You want an example of a farang who made it big here?

Try Bill H. of Minor Food Group.

And that's a tough business.

Bill H. did have the advantage of starting here as a kid with a good boost from his parents and he was here in a time of much greater freedom and opportunity.

Thaqt's not to take anything away from his abilities tough -- I'm a BIG fan of Bill's. Nor does it dispute your post.

I was waiting for a post from 'Sauron' (formerly known as Chateau-in-the-shade) 'Fufteen years' fufteen pints?
From his postings and confirmed by the last one this is someone who knows what he is talking about by hard experience and no little success. Someone with this type of knowledge answers the type of posting I copied and I have found it re-assuring of sorts. I am sure that business is difficult in any country. Brave men who try.
I tried to persuade Guinness to import their 'draught in bottles' about 3 years ago...no luck.
Both Sauron and Haam Sup have answered my questions superbly.
Thanks lads !!

Yes, a "boost" to say the least.   When you have parents (or rather parent) who are diplomats, you get:

1) a chance to make plenty of connections with people who don't really need to worry about things like "laws"

I was going to list 2) 3) and 4) but really 1) is what most of the show is about here.

There are successful falangs here, but you'll find that  most (who are successful) play their cards the local way.

;)

-hi, my dad's the ambassador, can I get an appointment?   oh, here's basket full of whiskey and a bunch of other junk I thought I'd bring you to be nice.  You can expect regularly delivered baskets from me from now on.-

Indeed losers tend to blame others for their own mistakes. Too many come to the LOS to enjoy the quality of life and are looking for a business opportunity to support that, wishfull thinking IMO. Most of them forget that only hard work and commitment can realise this.

I very much agree with Marcos and Saurons contributions, and no, I am not a faltering foreigner to keep up appearances, what a crap!

Too many think from day one that they are smarter than the locals, well try to work with them instead of trying to "outsmart" them. And when business goes bad, face it and do something about it. Don't go whining and weeping about it, I have met too many of these and I guess the author of the article is one of them.

You can compare this with marrying a BG   : yes the statistics are clearly against you, but some have succeeded and anyway  if you marry a "regularî girl the rate of failure is also very high.

Many start-ups in the West are not successful.  I guess if Roscoe would have been in Europe he would have complained about excessive regulations, heavy taxation, lack of flexibility...etc and discouraged anybody from doing business there!
