I know exactly where you are, for those interested, very near to what was Osaka Massage. Right near where I lived.....You have Floraville right nearby, I suspect many of the other staff shun it because of price.

Depends what you want, if you are prepared to detach yourself from the 'farang ghetto' there are some good places to live out that way, I had a house in an area that although mainly (reasonably well off) Thai, did have a few foreigners in there. My first house was 4 bedroom for 20,000B a month. Sadly it is not there any more, but that's a whole different story. Other houses around there can go for 35,000B down to about 7,000B really depends what you want. An apartment in Floraville will cost you a lot more. Lots of Thai apartment buildings in the area, should find something nice if you are prepared.

A taxi out there from say Sukhumvit soi 3 would be about 85-90B without any traffic. Morning traffic in that area can be horrendous as you are going out through Petchburi Road, or down Suk and via On Nut or soi 71.

A lot of it depends on your lifestyle? Do you buy alot of material goods (CD's, DVD's, cameras, dine out in fine restauranuts, different girl every night etc.). My needs are simple (books new and used are my passion). I have budgeted 10,000 bhat for rent, 10,000 Bhat for food and 10,000 for other (phone, laundry, transportation, etc). I can't drink for the next 9 months (on blood thinners). I have a girlfriend with a job. Anything I make over 30,000 Bhat is entertainment money. If I find this is inadequate then I'll take on private students. It's all in what you want and how bad you want it.

Be warned that most International Schools have the highest standards for behavior for their staff. If you are even seen in a 'naughty nitelife' area you could lose your job the next day. Work permit cancelled and Immigration will expect you to leave the country almost immediately.
No kidding.
Br careful.

You are getting some good advice that you need to listen to.

Yurune has lived in that area and knows it. He is suggesting it is much better for you to live there than to face a commute which may well be expensive and will certainly be time consuming. Get a small apartment (7,000-15,000) in the area, buy yourself a motorcycle and helmet and provide your own commute (but drive safely). You can probably save enough on commuting costs to pay for the motorcy.

BigD says to live in a hotel until you find your apartment. Do so. You can find an inexpensive hotel somewhere near the school.

You can live comfortably on 95K monthly but you can't hit Patpong every night. Come on over, relax and take your time. If you are such a hansum man (by your own admission), then you will have little trouble finding a lovely young thing that will be happy to make an arrangement with you. Shop for this just as you will for your apartment.

Listen to the old hands. Sometimes we do give good advice.

I would have thought it incredibly easy to live on 95k if you manage the two big expenses here well - rent and entertainment. As many have suggested, it's easy to find decent quality accomodation for under 20k a month and entertainment costs are as long as a piece of string. After going out 7 nights a week in my first 4-5 months, I now wander out maybe 3-4 times maximum, and usually only for dinner or a quiet beer or two.

95k is a king's ransom to most of your fellow teachers who will be managing on under half that.

My only note of caution is regarding your CC debt. OK, you might not 'want' to pay it off because your ex ran it up, but running away from it is hardly going to help. To begin with, this is a global economy and if you want credit in Thailand they WILL check your credit history at home, so give up all hope of getting a credit card or loans in THailand.

More importantly, what happens when you go home again? The debt will still be there, unless you're planning on running away forever. Not a nice position to find yourself in at 48, I'd suggest.

My advice. Come and have fun. Earn and enjoy your money. But talk to the credit card companies before you leave. On 95k I would have thought it easy to send 10k a month back to pay off those debts. I'm sure the CC companies will do a deal with you - any payment is better than no payment, for both you and them.

with 95 000 you will be the king of teachers. Many guys I know live on 30 000 and have a GF to support. About the cc leave it for now if its to big leave it for ever I did. They never going to take your thai salary at least not in 30 years or so when we all have ID numbers stamped in our forhead but then its to late.

Admirable business advice from a forum member widely known being beyond reproach when it comes to doing anything dodgy in business.

Run away from debts at your own peril, mate. I'd suggest this is a recipe for disaster not because it's not relatively easy to do it - sure it is - but because it makes moving back into UK society that much more difficult.

So he comes over here, knowing that going back is going to be difficult due to non-payment of debt. The 95,000k a month deal runs out after a while, then what? The Pattaya Plunge?

Sterling advice. Sterling advice.

And you wonder why Farang have a bad reputation here

I dont think 95k is such a good deal. You might live ok out of town and be able to have a night out or two but not much else.

I doubt it would cover cost of a car or decent apartment with big tv, ubc, dvd, live in maid etc all the essentials in life.

And it would not leave much for savings, holidays, flights home, pension etc

Still at least if you live in a shoebox on Suk 77 you will have loads of bar girls as neighbours.........
