International driving license is well enough for driving personal car here in Thailand. I have been driving in BKK for more than 5 years, got checked by police, got accident and had all fees re-imbursed, everything with international diring license. No need to apply for thai driving license unless you are lazy (same as me) to go back to your home wountry to apply to a new international one).

I drove from Pattaya to Trat and back during the week and it was f_cking great fun! Coming from Melbourne, Australia where you get fined $125 for going 63 kmh in a 60 zone it was great to just DRIVE and not have to keep checking the f_cking speedometer. Indicators? What are those things? I do not have an International driving license and my friend just told me to be prepared to hand over some money if I get pulled over for anything.

Yeah, great driving up-country here, I like the fact that at lights, provide you have a small car [ and its a rental] you can cruise up on the inside shoulder and overtake everybody, a few fake international drivers liceneces from Khosan rd are handy, just hand them out when mr plod asks you for 500 bt for no seatbelt or something, Oh, and beware pickups doing sudden u-turns from the center lane on double lane highways, - a trap for young players, most roads in I-sarn are fine, as originally laid by the US in vietnam days, nearly double lanes all the way from Bkk to Nong Khai, once you get past Khon Kaen, no highway police, so can go as fast as you like, if you do see all the traffic slow, and start driving in the left hand lane, pull over also, it means a radar ahead !

Yes driving in Thailand is nice, 'safe' and you can go discover the country side. But remember few things 1) Traffic rules and habits are much more different than your homecountry. Beware of everything, especially trucks, pick-ups and U-turn. Don't forget that some cars are driving front side, just becasue they don't want to go to the next U-turn; 2) Up-country hospital are NOT at the same level as Bangkok, even in places like Pattaya or Hua Hin or Phuket. If you get a serious accident upcountry, i hope that you will still be conscious and be able to be transferred to Bangkok (Bumrungrad for example). I know few people who got amputated ... 3) Many basic and older cars have a single layer front glass. In case of accident, it will blow at your face. Beware your eyes !!!! 4) If you rent a car without driving license, you might have no problem as long as you don't have any accident. If no driving license, you won't have insurance !!! Don't forget that if you kill someone, there will be no insurance to back-up you and you 'll be re-directed to .... jail ! Just keep that on minde, beware and driving safely.

I just hope that that will never happen to you guys. Or you'll finally understand why Thais flee after getting involved into an accident with a motorbike or a pedestrian.

Thailand Driverís License Requirement at Nonthaburi Department of Motor Vehicles. There seems to be different requirements at different DMV departments, so forgot about what I said in previous posts as below was actually what was required: 1 copy of Passport with minimum 1 year VISA. You will have to bring the actual passport along for verification. 1 copy (front & back) of foreign driverís license (In my case, CA, USA) NO TRANSLATION REQUIRED. 1 Original Medical Certificate (You can obtain from hospital. This is a minimum checkup eyes, blood pressure, heart rate and a couple of Ýquestions. 2nd Floor Bangkok General Hospital Rama IX, 400 THB). Total time 15 minutes. 1 Certified copy of resident address in Thailand, certified by your countryís embassy. (For Americans, use the American Services window. Tell them you need address certification for a Thai driverís license and they give you a form to fill out, Pay 1290 THB for Notary fee and resubmit to American Services Window, they will stamp it and impress the seal and return to you. Total time about 30 minutes. 2 photos 1î x 1î NOTE: A Work Permit is NOT REQUIRED Now having your photos and documentation you proceed to the DMV office. There you will have to fill out two additional forms. The forms I got were in Thai and I do not know if English ones are available. I would advise bring a Thai translator (GF or wife) along to fill out the forms. (10 minutes) One you submit the forms you take a color blind test (Red, Yellow, Green) and get the forms stamped that you passed. (10 minutes) Submit all the paperwork back to a different window and get a number card to wait while they prepare you license (60 minutes) They call you and you pay your 105 THB. Thatís it. No written or Driving Tests Cost Summary in Thai Badt Photos 120 Medical Certificate 400 USA Certificate of Address 1230 DMV Driverís License Fee 105 Total= 1855 Notice the most expensive item on the list is the US Embassy notary fee that is even 4x a doctorís check-up fee. And just to provide the finishing touch, my wife took out a motorcycle driver while returning from the Embassy, those guys have to watch out for those ìUî turns. Didnít feel like arguing with him so that cost 500 THB. So the answer to the going rate on injuring a motorcycle driver seems to be 500 THB BTW I like the Thai language for accident "O butt the head" It kinda makes sense

Quote: from ThaidUp on 9:50 am on Sep. 24, 2003 I am told that Thai insurance will not pay for accidents that you are invovle in without a Thai driver's license. Rather than confirming this, I am just going thru the process. More to follow.....
Thaiup, This is no true. I happen to live in Bangkok for a while and I have been driving for the last 2 Years. I did have an accident few months ago and the insurrance did work perfectely even if I di not own a Thai licence. I was fortunate enough to have the best insurrance available (Cant remember the name). Service was terrific. Anyway, I have asked my secretary to convert my licence to a thai one seems to be pretty easy. cheers Seth
