I'm getting some great replies. Too bad about French Goat getting banned.
Another thought I had, related to farming is agricultural brokering. This doesn't involve owning land, but rather buying and selling crops. Though I would rather have some ownership in land, as this provides a hedge, as the land is salable, even if the business doesn't pan out.
I like the idea one member had about a service for assisting retirees and others moving and adjusting to Thailand. Low start-up and low overhead. One problem with this is rapid saturation potential. It wouldn't take very many people providing this service to over saturate the market for the service. I have yet another thought - parking lots. When the number of cars on the road is increasing, parking lots become gold. Land is minimal - 1 rai is enough - and that can be leased; development is minimal, unless it's multi-level; overhead is almost nothing. But if the lot is at least half full consistently, money comes rolling in. Hmmm... Maybe I'll put up a string of parking lots, then if no-one uses them, I can grow crops on them! Or, conversely, buy a farm, and if there's a drought, turn it into a parking lot!
Here's another thought. I see an awful of motor bikes in Thailand, but I haven't seen any customization. Custom paint, custom chrome, custom wheels. Hmmm.

I have to agree with nm, oops alifco here.

small farming is for thai people. your piggies will get diseases, your crop will get infested.

you will be back in the city in no time. besides it is terribly boring in the country side.

Alifco, you're going to have to qualify that for me to understand you. An idiot in what regard? Otherwise your post is just worthless. Bite me.
RTB, I wasn't talking about small farming, I'm thinking of running up to around 1,000 rai to start. Livestock is out of the question - very high maintenance. I hear sugar cane is currently yielding around 6k baht per rai, so that brings in up to 6 million baht per year, after expenses. And, no, I would not be living in the boonies, I would be living in Bkk or Pattaya, making occasional trips upcountry as needed. A 'gentleman' farmer, as they say - I wouldn't want to actually get my fingernails dirty.

Then you need to avoid the motorcycle business.

Seems to me you're looking for an excuse to be in Thailand and you don't particularly care what business you lose money in. Farming, Commodities, Motorcycles. Have I got a Bar for you.

Alifco likes to talk of himself in the third person. You'll get used to it, after a while.

ftumch has a point - about you apparently not caring in which business you'll lose money in. The concept of a hands-off gentleman farmer, in Thailand (or any other country) seems foolish, and prone to losing your investment -- just the impression I get from reading other fora and sites.

Hey, it's your money!

if u have enough money u can bribe the officals that lease out the goverment land for you at 10 THB a rai a year or something. You can also farm land up north by renting other peoples land if you like. If you like to buy 1000 rai thats around 10 000 THB a rai or something or maybe 1000 if you buy it near the cambodjan landmines.

You're right, I am open to any business, but I'm not too keen on losing money. I'm under the impression that decent land, near paved roads, is nearer to 20,000 baht per rai. But I like the idea of bribing officials and getting it for 10 baht - I like flauting the rules, so long as nobody gets hurt.
I'm just looking for a way to make money locally to finance living in LOS. Make it in Thailand and spend it in Thailand. I'm not rich in the USA, but I have a few million baht I can throw into it, if I think it's something that has a decent chance of working out.
I think a bar has a pretty good chance of failing, so I wouldn't even want to try that.
I get the impression that many of you think that any business in Thailand is a guaranteed money loser, but I'm not so sure - I see plenty of business that seem to be doing just fine. Manufacturing, industrial processing and export firms are booming in Thailand. If all businesses were guaranteed to fail, there would be no economy, yet the economy is growing, and at a much faster rate than the US, UK, Oz, etc. It's just the bars that aren't doing so well.
Sure there are millions of Thais that are desperatly poor, but those aren't the business owners - those are the victims of cheap labor. The trick is: don't be a laborer. Although I plan to take advantage of cheap labor, I also plan to pay slightly more than the going rate, - not a lot more, but a little, and try to get better than average workers ('good luck', right?).
I think a lot of farangs think in terms of businesses that deal directly with farangs, but farangs make up only a tiny part of the local economy, and they fluctuate seasonally quite a lot. I think it's more feaseable to think in terms of the Thai economy, rather than the tourist economy.
Farming is good because everybody has to eat, and as population grows, land becomes more scarce, making it more valuable; but a farm has to be larger than a critical size in order to be profitable, and to take advantage of economies of scale. As long as labor remains cheap, I don't have to do the work myself. If it doesn't work out, I can always sell the land, and make back most, if not all, of my initial investment.
As far as being a 'gentleman farmer', it's what my family has done since time immemorial, at lease since 1066. I just haven't done it myself. Obviously, you do have to keep an eye on things or the hired help will rip you off blind. That doesn't mean I have to be stooping over in the fields picking cotton myself, though.
