IMO I believe Thailand can be an expensive place to live as the the west. Food and groceries here can also be equally priced or even higher than faranglands. It just seem that they are cheaper in Thailand because the number or the price, but looking at the poportion, food can be even more expensive here by adding up the value. for instance, In western country, they charge you more money but then they also triple the amount of the food or packages, so its like cheaper by the dozen, which is why it explains trollying fat farangs. At the same time here in thailand food seem cheap but they also sell them in small poportion in those freakin small packages that make you buy small but buy often.

So, you're saying in the West, you get larger portions, you get fat - and that's somehow a good thing?
While in Thailand, you get smaller portions, and don't get as fat (or have to pay more to get fat) ?
Personally, I found food portions in Thailand reasonable, but it entirely depends on WHERE you consumer. Broadening your obsrvation to 'Thailand' is incorrect -- you can eat very inexpensively, and well, if you select the right venue.
Similarly, if you eat in Scirocco or Vertigo every day, 3 meals a day, you will easily pay more than 3 meals a day at MacDonalds in the West.
Your comparison, the way you have established it, does not seem to make much sense.

but relatively speaking it is still far cheaper / better vfm in asia than in europe. in uk you would spend $200 in a week just on normal shopping

Thanks all for the replies regarding this issue. It is good to see that people other than myself notice the price of commodities in LOS.
I have a great map that I purchased at a book shop in Sukhumvit and is very detailed. It was produced by a Dutch/Swiss/German/Thai company in the 1990's who were at that time going to construct a superhighway linking Bangkok with the major sea port in Myanmar. It follows existing roads, some of which are only dirt tracks but I can imagine the scenery would be spectacular.
The superhighway never happened, but this map was put into production and costs only 180b. I have decided that the best way I can see the north western part of this country is to buy a push bike and load it up with my gear and make a move.
From my calculations it is a journey of about 400 klms to the village where I will be staying in Myanmar, and should take about 6-7 days on a good mountain bike. At this stage I am leaving BKK on the 14 November.
When I arrive at my destination I will find a computer and should be able to show you all some nice photos of the country side.

Just curious - aside from the scenic aspects, but why do you have no issues supporting a govt like Myanmar financially with your visit?
