Quote from above : I didn't think anyone had used snuff for the past century. ______________________________________ Adults in my childhood and adolescent years used to use it. I remember my neighbour, a Colonel in the British Army who had fought in the Boer War and the 1st.World War, mounted ( on horse, if anyone had any doubt ) hauling cannon from strategic position to strategic position between getting his 'lads' to fire the blessed things. He was a fly-fisherman when I knew him and a pipe smoker and full of stories of the horrors of war but he also had a vast range of snuff from which to choose from and poke up in between his nasal hairs as he recounted his escapades. He had at least 50 varieties of snuff, I suppose to match his 50 varieties of fly that he used to hand-make in his work-shop for his fishing expeditions. I believe there are more varieties on sale now in the U.K. since smoking in public is now a crime there. When the medical profession first came out in the 1960's with research linking tobacco to Cancer, there was a huge fall-off of sales for both snuff and chewing tobacco. Now, with the ban on smoking, maybe the sales will be picking up again. I just hope they take out all those brass spitoons from the broom cupboards. Strange how things change so rapidly. Anyone like to venture a thought as to why people sniff snuff and yet they snort cocaine ?

There's been a big increase in chewing tobacco (snuse, not snuff) use in California, and an empty drink/bottle has taken the place of the spitoons. It's still a health hazard, the spitting, but that's been the change.

Cow tipping is a fairly common urban myth in the US – involving people sneaking up on cows and tipping them over when they sleep. As for the main thrust of this thread, I would venture to guess the OP was referring to dip tobacco. A tobacco product that is typically placed between the lip and gum – the tobacco simply rests there while the saliva in the mouth draws the nicotine out of the tobacco and into the system. Dipping tobacco is not technically snuff or chewing tobacco but fairly commonly referred to by either name in The States. And probably 90+% of the time if one refers to “snuff” in the US they are really talking about dipping tobacco. The real snuff (powder or grain tobacco that is snorted) is not very common in The States. And the real chewing tobacco comes in three basic forms: twist, plug, and loose-leaf. Twist is basically a couple of tobacco leafs that are twisted together after being harvested and then after being cured one simply cuts off a piece and chews away. Use to be fairly limited to basically tobacco farmers and areas adjacent to farms, but now there is a niche market for this type of chew. Plug type chew involved pressing cured tobacco leaves in a sweat syrup and then pressed into a block or “plug” of product. One then cuts off a piece to chew. And lastly the most common (at least in The States) is loose-leaf chew. Processed in a similar fashion to plug type chew, but instead of pressing the leafs into a block the leaves are shredded and packaged in a pouch. One then simply takes some of the shredded “loose-leaf” product and chews away. Now I know someone will say this so I’ll go ahead and put it on the table. Yes, technically loose leave chewing tobacco can be dipped (and I know a few guys that actually do this). But the cut of the leaf is quite large and not really ideal for this application. Dipping tobacco has been cut into much smaller pieces for the specific purpose of making it easier to use as dipping tobacco.

I suppose after a few years of this, resulting in no teeth, one can escalate to using the loose leaf tobacco as a dipping tobacco because there is such a wide expanse of gums exposed at that stage, to absorb the nicotine into the blood stream.

A few years with the possibility of no teeth is a lot better than a few years of smoking, and no lung......lol. Given the choice, my doctor would much rather have me chew than smoke, given the long term risks in both cases.
