So is it possible to get some sort of visa, the O described here, or another long term visa, if you are under 50 and have $$$ required to deposit, show as income etc??

I believe that you can get an visa even if you aren't retired/married to a Thai if you put and lave 3 million baht into a Thai bank account.

It's called an investment visa. The least restrictions of any visa after you get it. Contact any Thai embassy directly to inquire about it.

My situation is similar to Chopper's. I too am under 50 (46 in a few days) and Mrs Shreddie is Thai. We currently live in the UK but are contemplating making the move to LOS possibly later this year or more likely next year. At first the non immigrant O looks like the appropriate visa choice for me. The THB400K in the bank is not a problem and we should have our house built by then. However both Mrs Shreddie and I would also like me to work while in Thailand - probably start our own business. I figured I would apply for a work permit when I was out in Thailand. But after having now read a little bit about this on the net, I gather I would be prohibited from working with a non immigrant O. So that no longer seems like the right choice for me, given our plans. What other visa options are open to me - presumably one of the business visas now becomes my best choice? Is it possible to hold more than one type of visa at the same time - one allowing me to stay, and another allowing me to apply for a work permit? How would my situation change if Mrs Shreddie should pre-decease me? Would that outcome invalidate a non immigrant O - perhaps also pointing to one of the business visas as my best option? Should I start out with non immigrant O then try to "convert it" to one of the business types once our business plans are better defined? Any thoughts please?

My two baht worth.... there are restrictions to setting up companies by foreignors depending on the industry you choose. Some may not allow foreign ownership over a certain % while I believe most will not allow foreignors to own more than 49%. Be very careful right now as there has been a huge crack down on nominee shareholding arrangements. another two baht worth.... spend money on getting very accurate legal advice before you attempt to set up anything right now. The mood is very anti-foreign ownership. You don't need to get into a situation where you have brought money in, registered and then get a call from the authorities that it is an illegal registration. Goodbye visa, good bye investment. That will be 4 baht please!!

I echo JA's comments. I pulled my company out of an expansion to LOS just because of these very rule changes. My partner and our investors decided that the climate is too risky for foreign investment. We are now looking at Vietnam as a venue. At least they are upfront about their rules...

SW To get a Business Visa you need a letter from the company you are going to work for....then you have to be applying for a WP or it can be revoked. You cannot just apply for a WP, unless you set up your own company. The current pit falls in that have been mentioned. Whatever you do....do it in Hull....not in london, in London they are strict and tend to follow the rules.

You can get an O class visa in Hull also. All you need to do is sign a "Self Certification" form which states you have enough money to support yourself. All forms are on the Thai Consulate website
