A guy I know was just back in europe last week he has been in bangkok more than 10 years has a flat on suk but further down. He is in the tourist business brings tourists all over on tours seems to be doing ok, these jobs are available if its your thing but you need to get your foot in the door. Others are teachers mostly sorry to say, know one guy who is a senior manager with a big logistic company. I met him in 2005 when I was considering the move. They were looking for somebody with experience in 3PL which I did not have at the time otherwise they would have hired me (this was a business contact from other contacts here in europe), funny thing about 6 mths later I did have the experience as I have been part of a large project setting 3PL up in europe. The company I work for is japanese with offices in bangkok I went there in 2005 not a computer in sight, me with a labtop. Unless they would give me the salary I have here forget it, the local salary well id rather visit thank you. I have a contact there and its improved so the door is open but im fine where I am for now. Like Local says sukomvit, one has to be strong to withstand partying there every day, and all good intentions will fly out the window if your not carefull. Another good advice of his if you get work never talk about what you get up to, act stupid if you must. The buying a business lark is fine but depends how much experience you have in business and Thai ways. Of course you need some cash for that as well I had a meeting with this guy who had a good job and he and his wife told me many guys were loosing jobs and it was hard this is 2005. They had seen many expat friends have to leave. They advised me to not come there to look for work ( I do have a family to support ) but to look at companies in europe willing to send you there then you can get a better package. There are websites like this one http://th.jobsdb.com. If your alone you can give it a go, I would advice to work a bit in the uk and save more. The more you save the longer you can last. But if you think you have enough ? is it ever enough out there.????? Another friend of mine built a bar, sold it, then helped other falang not get f***ed by thier girlfriends when buying bars ( dont buy a bar ) hes now in singapore working, its close pays better and you can holiday in LOS for the cheep pussy. Also dont rule out the teaching gig, learn thai go for the teaching course even by doing a teaching gig for a few months you can extend your stay while looking for something better. Im ok marry thai lady hab big money wana buy bar for me. Good luck

seems to me almost nothing will change bootydaddy's mind but I don't think we'll hear him on here posting about what a great time he had a year from now one piece of advice that you should not ignore do NOT work w/o a work permit, you're just setting yourself up for disaster if you do I trust in what cheapcharlie said about others seeing expats have to pack it in & leave & it's only gotten worse since 2005

Quote: from LocalYokul on 8:28 pm on Aug. 20, 2008 I cannot recommend looking for a job on the ground in BKK unless you stay completely AWAY from Suk. Rd. & all the whores
Hey, what's wrong with staying in Suk. Rd. area? I started off on a 50K/month salary living in Suk. Rd. Eventually, I got it to 60K/month after 1 year. The most important thing is not to go partying every night on your own money. And I was here to work and live here, not go whoring. That helped curb the expenses.

I moved here in '04 for the whoring. A year in Pattaya got most of it out of my system (temporarily), then found a job on thaivisa.com. Not easy to crack the job market, especially with no work experience here, since most employers assume you won't last long, must fight the bureaucracy to hire a foreigner, and could hire a thai for much less. Hence, your best chance is to offer some special skills.

TA, you are right about the special skills bit. If you have nothing special to offer, they wouldn't bother with you, when they get a local or a few locals. One hassle of a company when hiring a foreigner, is to increase the paid up capital by 2 million Baht, unless the company is a BOI registered company.

Ok It's actually my friend, who is the one with the confidence about this situation, he wanted me to post here to get an idea of people's opinions. I myself am a little more skeptical. He just feels, that if you put everything into to it, and your spending 8 hours day whether it be on the intenet or in Bkk city looking for jobs, that the sheer hard work & persistance will pay off. Will hopefully pay 20/40k a month, allowing us to stay longer on the saved money we have. He is very grateful for all input, but seems un-deterred. I can't deny that you need to go into something with a 100% positive attitude and beleive. Of course on the other hand being realistic also helps. As previously mentioned the teaching thing just aint gonna happen, even on a temp basis while we establish ourselves, and as farangs that does limit our chances, even more so within a 3 month period. He has been applying for jobs already, he applyed with Bangkok Bank, and recieved a reply, to confirm that they have his application. I don't whether or not they know he is farang, as this is not stated in the job requirements. Or if it's just an autmatically generated reply. Quite of few of these jobs are not specifying "Thai National" There seems to be a large number of nice Condo's that have remained unoccupied for sometime, that are very cleary out of a Thai National's budget, so I guess it makes you think. I'm still not 100% about this plan myself, I will need to see what feedback we receive from prospective employers before we go, if it happens. In the mean time here are some links to actual jobs we went for, please have a look, there arn't any major required skills that we don't possess. It's my understanding that the bachelors degree, is not required for non "Thai Nationals". I've seen quite few job that are specifying Thai National only, these ones don't so I don't know what that means. http://th.dimension.jobsdb.com/career/Default.asp?PID=3&AC=BBL&EC=BBL&GC=&JobID=121&LID=1&THB147039431333542 http://www.adecco-asia.com/thailand/jobdetail.asp?jobAdvID=3029 Further feedback based on this would be very helpful Thanks

bootydaddy5, he's going to need a bit of luck too. For me, it was luck, I tried applying everywhere, but got nothing. What got me the job was when someone I met a few months earlier, whom I had left my CV with, knowing that I wouldn't get a job directly from her. Towards the end of my 2 month search, I received an email from her asking me if I was still interested in a job, YES!!! was my answer. Tell you friend to do a lot of networking for he will never know, which person that he met a few weeks or months ago, whom may remember him, and may make that recommendation for him.
