This advise was and is good advice if your entering a land border- I have seen many rejected these days on just appearance and little funds - and or attitude.
The 20,000 reference is land based entry not air.

Yes this is mentioned as criteria for a visa. Also most airlines are not allowed to carry anyone who's passport is not 6 month valid or without a return ticket. Also fairly simple to prove you have money at the nearest ATM.
The rules change at a land border and corruption and or enthousiastic immigration might probably be more strict on these rules.

You have to remember that all the new rules are designed to stop visa runners, those trying to stay long term in Thailand on tourist visas. If you simply cross the border and come right back into Thailand, without any kind of multi entry visa, you very possibly could be hassled, if your passport shows a pattern of doing this, but if you cross over into Cambodia, go to Seim Reap and Angkor Wat for a few days, then return, you will not be hassled at all. Immigration are very good at determining who is a real tourist, and who is just doing visa runs to stay long term in Thailand. They have as good of memory for faces they haven't seen for awhile as bar girls do.
Oh, and if you are hassled with a money issue, just remember that there are absolutely no ATMs that issue Thai baht outside of Thailand, or show a balance in Thai baht, or even show a balance, and you are not in Thailand until you clear past immigration. Immigration will not allow you to use an ATM inside Thailand if you haven't cleared immigration. People have made this mistake.

Yes I know they want everyone to choose the correct visa which in my case would be visa on arrival and additional 15 day on return. Of course they can see in their system im not on visa runs.
I know all the storys of passports going to the border but lets be honest you are pretty desperate living on 30 day visa runs that are simply not designed for that. Of course you need to arrange to have the cash with you. But who takes thai baht to Thailand? Surely thats 'or too the equivilent'.
At the airport its a different story though as even the 10 k or 20 k for family is part of the criteria we all know that all of the countries offered that are on the list for a reason. The airlines check passports and return ticket on risk of heavy fines. As you say they know what they are looking for.
My son was born in Bangkok and still has a passport so technicaly I could renew it but as he does not want to live there whats the point?
In the end he should be happy with Ko samet and hopefully his sisters will keep him amused.

Thais are very simple shallow people.
Wear expensive clothes and clean shaven
And have good funds
Appear friendly and respectful
You will never have trouble
Just get the visas in order
Be polite

CC, actually as you're from the Netherlands you don't need a Visa on Arrival. The correct term in your case (and of 54 other countries) is Visa Exempt.

I was pointing out the correct terminology. A 'Visa on Arrival' (visa term) is different from a 'Visa Exempt' (visa term).
The former one is for countries like India, China etc.

The latter for 55 countries like USA, Netherlands etc.
They are two different visa terms.
It's like most people talk about 'Retirement Visa' while the correct term is 'Non-Immigrant OA-Long Stay Visa'.
The visa DG refers to is a 'Tourist Visa'. 2 x 30 days + 15 days = 75 days. These can only be obtained at an Thai Embassy / Consulate abroad. I think Charlie is confused.
