Quote: from bkkz on 12:15 am on April 5, 2011 The cost of living in Malaysia (at least in Kuala Lumpur) is almost comparable to Bangkok, though I was say, it is slightly higher in some aspects, perhaps 10-15%.
Expats need not necessarily have to retire and live in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.... they can live in places like Penang, Langkawi, Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, Sarawak, Sabah, etc where the cost of living and property prices are cheaper than Kuala Lumpur

Quote: from bkkz on 10:22 am on April 5, 2011 Where can I get such a bargain? I heard that real estate in Kuala Lumpur has sky-rocketed like crazy.
You can buy a 2-bedrooms apartment for US $ 26,300 in cities outside Kuala Lumpur, eg in Penang, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, Seremban, etc

Oh yeah, you are right about Langkawi. It's a duty free zone (just like Labuan), cheap booze and cigarettes! I remember getting a bottle of Jack Daniels (750 ml) for only RM 24 (~ 240 B).

I was told by a friend who lived in a house besides that occupied by a group of bachelor Muslim gals in Kuala Lumpur that these gals wear scarfs ( "tudungs" ) & Muslim clothings to work but the moment they reached home to their rented house they promptly discard their scarfs & Muslim clothings and dress in tight-fitting mini-skirts to await their boyfriends to visit them for some "sanuk-sanuk"

PL69.... I must admit that you have very good information and knowledge about Malaysia. Being a Muslim country, they are very open and liberal. Religious problems can happen anywhere in the world,no guarantee...at all. By the way I am not a Muslim. Now I am talking to one of my very close friend in Thailand, who retired & now lives in Hua Hin.

Please let us know your final decision.... take your time to come to a decision, maybe from 6 months to a 1 year..... do some in-depth research, take to friends about the pros & cons of either retiring in Malaysia or Thailand Visit both countries for a period of time, visit the cities you might want to retire to and then decide.... no need to rush BTW, are you thinking of retiring to Malaysia/Thailand alone or with your whole family ? Good luck and all the best to you !

Report from The STAR (Malaysia) dated Tuesday 5 April 2011 :- New Residence Pass lets skilled expats stay longer ================================ PETALING JAYA: Highly-skilled foreign professionals who seek to stay and work longer in Malaysia may now apply for the Residence Pass a new immigration pass also issued to their spouses and children. Talent Corporation of Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp), which spearheads the country's move to attract, nurture and retain world-class talent, said foreigners could apply online for the pass via http://www.expats.com.my/rp. The Residence Pass, launched by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein on Thursday, offers such foreigners a longer tenure of five to 10 years to reside and work in Malaysia. Unlike the Employment Pass that is currently held by most expatriates, the Residence Pass is not tied to an employer and allows their spouse to seek employment in Malaysia. “The introduction of the Residence Pass helps facilitate top foreign talent to commit to Malaysia for a longer term and contribute to our development,” TalentCorp chief executive officer Johan Mahmood Merican said. “The Residence Pass provides greater flexibility as it is personal-to-holder and not tied to a specific employer. “The pass will also be issued to the spouse and children aged below 18 of successful applicants,” he added. Johan said for the initial phase of implementation, the applicants should currently hold a valid Employment Pass. For details, visit http://www.talentcorp.com.my/ or call 03-8315 3195
