I did not see any Thai's complain when meters were installed and the average fare was cut by 50% except for the taxi drivers.

The price increase would only put them back to 1990 levels. Many Thai's use Tuk Tuk's or motorcycles as they negoaite special rates with drivers in exchange for them being steady customers.

Why would any consumer complain at cheaper prices? Regards Tuk-Tuks - I agree a portion of Thais use them, but imho I see far, far more Thais in taxis than I do in tuk-tuks. - This will affect Thais in a big way!

But to be honest the fare has not been increased for any costing reason. It is too discourage travel around town via anything other than busses, BTS and the 'coming soon' (555) MRT

I probably spend 5 to 10'000 baht a month for taxirides. still beats having a car.

I think even with the increase I'll be able to get home at 2 or 3 am in the morning for the same price. there are just to many empty taxis around that time.

into town I usually go with the company car.

lets see how this is going to work out.

I thought I once read, that the taxi drivers are actually AGAINST the increase??

has there a date been named, yet??

I wonder about the impact of the fare increases on the average Thai's budget. My TGF lives pretty close to the edge of her budget (at least of what I give her every month - she jots her spending down on a spreadsheet every month) and she has resorted to baht buses and motos more and more to keep her budget down. 50 baht buys her a meal, so she is loath to send it on taxi fare. There are some really good values with the local tuk tuks and songthaews. I remember one tuk tuk in particular, that always shuttled people from her old neighborhood to the main square about a kilometer or so away. It was piloted by this really old Thai gentleman, and cost 5 baht. Beat the heck out of walking on those hot summer days, and a fun ride up and down the back alley sois.

If you look at from the tourist perspective, I agree that thai taxis are damn cheap, even after the increase. But if you consider it from the thai perspective, do you really think that they'll have enough money to take these taxis ? Don't forget that most of people are taking the buses rather than taxis with bus fares starting at 3, 5 bahts. Why would they pay 250 bahts for the same ride.
As for wealther thai, they are NEVER taking the taxi, but their own cars. Taxis are not for their class.
I agree that few years back, you had to negoctiate every single time that you were taking the taxis but that was a mainly a problem for the tourists. Since 1994 or 1995 (i don't remember), there are taxi meters. Good ! But I haven't seen so many taxis since few years, tehy are all around the town, mostly empty, and most of them with recent Toyota Corolla. Do you think that price increase will help to fill all these cars ? I doubt.

Anyway, that is just a remark and we'll see what will happen anyway.

For Newbies - in BKK:

Tuk tuks were once routinely cheaper than taxis, but recently their fees are regularly higher than taxis. So I now wave tuk tuks on.

Never take a taxi that's parked in a line in front of an establishment. They are sitting there to grab tourists, off meter, and their asking price is usually twice the metered rate. Walk out to the streeet and hail one cruising by with red light on, for a metered ride.

If you do get in one which does not go on meter, politely tell him to either go on meter or let you out immediately. Except in unique circumstances they will either go on meter or there will be a metered taxi along within seconds.

Motorbikes are a great way to zip through bumper-to-bumper traffic, but your life's in the hands of a 16 year old who may just enjoy sniffing glue with his buddies as much as he enjoys playing chicken with buses.

The Sky Train is incredible, and a combination of Sky Train, and taxi, works great getting past downtown in traffic jams.

The buses are great too if you bother to learn about them, as they have priority lanes that cut right through a lot of otherwise stalled auto traffic.

Plan to arrive at scheduled evening events a half-hour early and you'll probably assure getting there on time, or at worst in time for an early relaxing cold one.
