It is interesting that you mention that a lot of Brits want to leave the country.
I work in Saudi although I commute from Bahrain these days but all the Brits I talk to here do not want to go home.They love the sunshine and the ME lifestyle which is much more laid back.
In fact the majority have bought houses in Cyprus and Spain and never intend on living in Britain again.

I am not sure of the exact figures but the ammount of people that either are leaving or want to leave the uk is scary.............
Even I at 36 (yes I dont look my age) have allready calculated what I need to have in the bank, income every month to live in BKK......... and compared to the UK its not a lot!!!!!
The biggest prob is, and yes any advice welcome is say I have enough savings etc to live in BKK for the next 10 years as NM would say with no worries......... do you move there know and worry about what happens in 10 years time when your money runs out......... or do you put it off untill you have enough money for the rest of your life?
Only down side to that is, I know life is 2 short and I have had a couple of friends just drop dead etc..... sorry for the serious post!!!!!

Except for the age I could have written that post !
I lost a dear friend last year to cancer and another this year to a heart attack (he lived in Pattaya at the time).
Another friend is now working in BKK as an English teacher and I never thought he would be up for that but he is enjoying the experience. He rang today and said he couldn't care if he never saw the UK again !!
What is happening to a country when so many feel the same ? I did not see in the New Year as I had to get up and go to work at 6am. I had an early drink with a friend who lives (soon to be back in Pattaya for good!) in Twickenham. £5 a ticket to get into some pubs ! That's without food and entertainment. I usually have a gig in a nightclub for the New Year so that improves things. (amazing considering my lousy sense of rhythm). It did not feel right last night. When I was young (many years ago) there used to be a bit of a buzz in the air. Now so many take one or two weeks in Spain/Portugal etc during the Christmas period just to get away. I felt a lot of anger in the air and sure enough my mate (lives close to Twickenham High Street) heard a right old fight at 3am this morning ! Glasses and bottles smashing," I'll fffing get you etc!"
If I had the opportunity I would leave also but I would not spend 12 months of the year in Thailand as there are other places to visit. Thailand is still No.1 on my list though.

Its just rip off britain, yes I get paid well (very well infact) but it does not go far with all the taxes you have to pay etc, this country is going down the pan faster than people can leave. All I can say is thank god for house price inflation as that has made me enough to retire far away from this country.........
My present plan is to spend 6 months of the year away and 6 months here, at least for the next few years, as I have a share in a business here that needs me arround...........
I am a great believer in life is 2 short and you are a long time dead etc......... Cant see the point of ending up with sh_t loads of cash in the bank but no body to spend it with whats the point................
As some one once said to me "The last cheque you ever write should be the one to bounce"
God thats deep off off to get pissed and have a laugh!!!!

Apparently house prices went up 15% last year ?
What area are you located in? The house I was born in (Richmond Surrey) was sold in 1964 for about £4000. It has just been sold again for £500,000 !
Is that really a sign of a 'healthy' economy ?
My company get very raty about buying paper clips !

Not a Brit, just curious on how much do YOU figure you'd need to retire in Thailand.
I've seen the other post, everyone is different on their standard of living.
I'm just looking at purchasing a condo, golfing 3-4 times a week, and hitting the town every other night.
Looking at a 4,000.00 dollar a month retirement in 4 years.

On another note: Watching CNN, I see that the fine for an expired vehicle tax is 80 pounds!!!!
Passed thru Heathrow last month and paid 15 pounds for a sandwich w/ fries and 2 beers (airport prices or standard cost).

I live in Leeds, up north, I am lukcy enough to have a few houses that I rent out they have doubled in value over the last 6 years................
At the moment I could easy have £100K in the bank to move to LOS that I would hope would be enough for several years of fun........... my self impossed budget would be arround £1K a month give or take.......... That would allow me to keep my business going in the UK and hopefully would provide enough income when my intial cash had run out........... but WTF 8 years is a long time in the future................ My plan is to keep a retainer from my company that covers some of my monthly expenses and I work when required 2.......
And its not the women, its the fact that you can get a nice apartment for 20K a month, nice weather, people zero stress other than getting a visa and I am sure I will find some business or other to invest in............
I know several UK guys that have done the same and they have no plans to come back................ getting the visa I guess would be the hardest part...........
Just imagine how bloody good my pool would be
