I have lived in a neighbouring south asian country for far too long, where insanity is certainly a requirement for survival. If LOS were not so close it would have not been possible to have survived here for so long.
On the other hand full-time expat residence in somewhere like Bkk could really mess up one's mind. But then as The Machine says, expat existence is both crazy and addictive.

A long time resident told me a few years ago
how his headoffice wanted him to return and
take up a very senior position however since
he was approaching the age and financial
security where he could retire, not wanting to
leave Thailand he told the HR Director that he
would consider the move only if they could

I haven't been back "home" to the US in over 13 years so I don't have any homesickness problems.
Living in Thailand makes me considerably more laid back than I would be in the US. For those of you that have met me, can you imagine what would happen if some self-righteous feminazi told me I was doing something she didn't like? After I got released from jail, I would just go back to Thailand and get calm yet again.
Like The Machine, I have done the loop the loop in the ME also. After this, Thailand is a piece of cake.
