I find day to day the general public are as nice as pie.
people make it sound that you could never meet a grumpy tosser anywhere else?..so a shop assistant here is rude...do I think "Thai's hate foreigners" or "He's a grumpy individual"...the latter.....people are just as rude on occassions if not more so in London...rotten place in some respects...
It's all about perception....and you make your own luck if you know what I mean.....

I agree with you, I almost always experienced good karma when interacting with locals. It's just that in the last 6 months I'm increasingly coming across people who feel that the place has lost the magic (for them) it once had. So I was just curious to hear from people on the ground, so to speak.
Gollum: funny you should say that - you of all people (after all, you've made a career from sniping from the edgeways), should be so sensitive or complaining about perceived snide remarks. Do yourself a favour, post something relevant to the thread or risk increasingly to sounds like a "Waste Management Consultant ". Quite an apt way to descibe yourself, don't ya think?

Again sarge...it's about perceptions...
Some people seem to feel the world is against them when things don't quite go as they like it...but in reality the change is minor or nil.
it also depends on how much of the Thai lifestyle bars play %wise. If all girly bars closed tomorrow, I'd still be a happy if not happier resident. Some people may find an attack on the bar scene as the world coming down on their shoulders.
But every day attitudes changing...I don't think so, maybe just a few nudges in what most thai people would see as the right direction.

Sarge... I have a view but it aint going to be popular...
I have noticed a hardening of attitude towards farang over the last five years. I dont think it has much to do with a change on behalf of Thais. The reality is that the quality of farang has fallen considerably as a consequence of seriously lax immigration laws and ever cheaper airline tickets (and package holidays).
10 years ago Pattaya was the hottest property market for Thais looking for a weekend home. Now most Thais I know simply dont go there. It is full of low life Russians and farang kinnok (note Thais never talk about Yippon kinnok). At the end of the day, the respect for farang has simply fallen with the quality of the farang tourist/resident.
Luckily none of this has permeated to 'baan nok' where I expect you will be meeted with open arms. And while the Thais might be a little less friendly, this is still one of the few countries in the world where foreigners are liked rather than just tolerated.

thanx for your contribution although I'm not quite sure that I would entirely agree with you regarding Pattaya. Yes the place can be rough around the edges and in some places not for the fainthearted but I do enjoy being on holiday there. Property wise, I feel there is a boom especially in Jomtien, where at times it feels like a building site and prices are going up all the time.
OTOH, I'm quite keen to expand on your baan nok experiences as I'm going to the N.E. soon and I've always led to believe that locals are very warm to farangs. Maybe because they don't get to see many of them................. lol

As a general rule I find the more exposure that Thais have had to farangs the less pleasant they tend to be ON FIRST CONTACT. Having seen the way that many tourists behave with the locals you can see why hotel and shop staff are expecting the worst the moment they see you walking up to them. If you then don't behave like a complete arsehole they immediately let the defences down and 99% are truly welcoming people.
Not sure if I can agree with Abrak that the standard of the average farang tourist is on a downward slide (remember the original farang tourists were R&R soldiers from the Vietnam war and hippie backpackers) but I think that fact that Thailand is such a package holiday destination now that the average tourist is less prepared and aware of local customs and the like.
Yeah, I sometimes THINK that things are changing for the worse and that the place is not as good as last time I visited - but if I'm honest I reckon its me thats changing not everyone else.

Hey I'm not complaining...
If you compare life here to 10 or 12 years ago...
...lets see..
1) The traffic is better in BKK or getting to say Pattaya/Hua Hin.
2) Rents (in US$) are cheaper
3) Quality restaurants are more plentiful
4) Hotels are better and cheaper (again in US$). (Phuket might be an exception)
5) The TV is infinitely better
6) Clubs/nightlife are far more diverse
7) The girls know how to give a blowjob better...
This is all in marked contrast to say the Phillipines...
