Visa runs not a great hassle, altho bad news is usually every 40 days !  - Rent a car and drive to Aranyaprahthet and back, get the whole thing done in a day, 3-4 hour drive, and maybe an hour tops to wander over and back -  But plenty of loopholes if you have some money in a Bank here, or have a Thai wife -  also prior to SARs, it was handy to take a trip to Singapore/Vietnam/Cambodia etc for a few days when the Visa is almost up, and of course get a new tourist 30 day, + 10 day extension, on return.  If you are here full time, you do need to travel a bit or do something, hard to imagine I guess for non-locals, but even Bars and TGs do tend to get a tad boring day in day out !

hello all

Any chance the Thailand gov will change the rules for visas from 30 days to 60 90 or longer? This is the big sticking point for me going to the LOS for longer then just a vacation. I don;t need to work when I am in Thailand for I will have enough money to live on for months at a time. Just the Visa thing is buggin me. Or does anyone think they will change the loopholes to make it tougher to do Visa runs in the future. Which is the biggest worry I have Doing the Visa run option

My plan is after my kids are rasied is to Work here in the USA over the summer months save up money and Live in Thailand for 4-6 month streatches over the winter. Then repeat this pattern for the rest of my life thanks for any opinions on this subject Rock on guys

b4b, if you want to stay for longer durations, just apply for a tourist visa at the nearest Thai embassy or consulate. You will get a 90 day tourist visa, and that will save you the hassle of the exits. Note, however that you will initially get a 60 day stamp, and you will need to go to the Immigration office (at Suan Phlu) to extend it for another 30 days.

Hello all

bkkz thank you for the info. Actually a visa run every 30 days is a small price to pay for liveing there in the LOS. I would not mind it at all really But my concern is how long will this loophole in the system allow you to just go cross into Cambodia or werever and just hop right back into the country again. And do it over and over umlimited amount of times???

I find that much less than 10% of US citizens have passports.  Whenever I use mine for ID, I get a strange, and suspect look.  I don't get it.  I would think that travel is something that anyone would want to do.  The biggest discouragement to travel is the cost... or one would think so.  Cost of the airfare, hotel etc... But, you also have the fear of the unknown factor.  For my part... I am thinking that I could and would move to LOS, but for the lack of income opportunities.... Yes, I can teach English, and have the credentials for it, but.... the pay is terrible.   I am thinking that if I had a reserve that I could draw on.....  But how much would I need???  These are the questions that keep me from moving....  Yep, I know that it is best just to dive in.  Will do it one day.... sooner rather than later I hope.

Visa runs are a minor nuisance, no more. There is no reason to let them deter you from staying in LOS.

Remember, TIT. It is, in fact, quite possible to arrange for your passport to exit and re-enter the country without you. In practice I find this is the cheapest (as well as by far the most convenient) option if I'm not leaving LOS in the normal course of events.

You need to remember that Thai bureaucracy is a lot more... er, 'flexible' than many Westerners are used to. Many of the official rules are quite daft, but also easily circumvented. Palms need to be greased a bit, that's all.Ý Ý

Arcadius, you are a brave man!

I don't know, but the idea of parting from my passport and have it go overseas by itself and without me and trust that it will come back safely to daddy  is a bit scary for me. Do you mean it literally like I read you or do you mean that the passport is made to believe that it went out and it actually didn't go out? Ý

I am a US citizen, I have a passport because I love to travel.  Many do not want to leave the US.

The reason....they have jobs that have them working 50 weeks per year with only 2 weeks vacation.  Most people use this time to work on the house or visit family in the USA.

Traveling is for the young and the old for the most part...I'm neither but I'm more of an exception than the rule.

The typical European could have anywhere from 30-60 days off per year....to an American that is ridiculous.  Again, that is not everyone but I'd say the majority.
