Respectfully, Holmes, Thailand ain't Singapore.

I think Chilli is pretty close, and Hermanolobo is RIGHT on - networking is your BEST chance, and having a needed skill will get you past the first few layers of crap, IF you can make the necessary contact. İYou'll NEVER do that sending resumes, or responding to BKK Post ads. İYou MUST sell yourself. İAnd being in Thailand for a while (actually 1 month isn't enough, unless you already know your way around pretty well) is the ONLY way to network.

Now if I just had a needed skill...

People in these parts don't hire you for what you can do, they hire you for what you can do for them. In short, to make them look good.

Merit can put you on the shortlist most times but from then on, its all down to chemistry, trust, the buddy factor, recommendations etc. And yes, networking is one way of achieving that result. I was hoping that came through between the lines of my last post, but must thank you for stating it more directly.

Netorking can take a painfully long time, to break into that circle, get invited to the right gatherings etc. (unless you're that guy from 'Catch  me if you can'). If one can afford to hang around in Bangkok that long, then more power to him/her. Best to go in with eyes wide open.

Cheers!

Tourist, the best way, is to get your butt over here, and meet people. When I got here 4 years ago, looking for a job, I applied for as many jobs I could, but most companies were not interested in foreigners, hence i didn't get a single reply. I got a job, somehow, by luck, because I left my resume with a webmaster (that's the networking part). I was almost out of money, and almost resigned myself to teach English (which was my last resort, as I hated wearing ties). The lucky email came, I replied, went for the interview, took the offer of 40,000 B/month. It was a small sum, but I was grateful to be able to work here, doing what I wanted.

Perserverance and a bit of luck helps.

"The very best should be to rob a bank and come to LOS to enjoy the money..."

this is very bad advice. the average bank robber gets away with less than $3000.  And it is a federal crime.  Starbucks is the way to go - lots o cash (at busy ones grandcentral lets say) no guards and no FBI after.

Tourist, taking BK's cue here's something a bit more constructive.
People with professional hiring practices do employ the services of headhunters. The guys below are quite good. Maybe you want to check them out. You can run a search to see if theres anything suitable in Thailand. Of course, if you have thought of this, then you are already ahead. Good luck!

@tourist: the only advise i can give you: never ever! work for a thai! I've worked in bkk for a foreign company (thanks god) but was sitting inside the office of our partner in thailand. in this 18 months i got to know how the CEO, GM etc. of the thai company run things. it's a miniature dictatorship. the fluctuation of staff is unbelievable! i have not seen so many people come and go in any other company (in germany) like i have seen here. nobody is allowed to make a decsision if the big khun "stalin" is not around. to make matters worst our khun "stalin" here is mega proud of thailand and khun thaksin. thailand is the center or earth! there's also a bit of anti-farang feelings involved in the upper management. strange..his daughter is married to a farang and lives in LA.
i was asked to join in for interviews for new staff (to check the english skills) so many times and there were really some good people! but, the sallary they ask was too high (according to khun "stalin") and they were not employed. we're talking about 15-20K per month here. instead they hire some for 12-14k per month, but english skills = 0 (zero!).
as i'm going to leave thailand soon due to the economical situation back in germany and here in thailand, there's no way i would want to work for a thai company or a foreign company with a thai boss! no-no-no! i had some really good offers to work in bkk, but i will not bend over and let some khun "mini-stalin" stick it up my butt.
hope this helps!

I looked into this.

SAP wants a LOT of money for it's courses, and I'm damned if I can figure out where to begin, or if, having taken courses, I could expect to find a job. İAnd I'm an engineer with nearly 20 years of software and hardware design experience.

SAP's website is a ponderous thing...

Mr. Machine, could you give us (me!) a few pointers as to where to realistically start?

Thanks,
haam sup
