Accident 1) Hit a dog doing 120k, screwed the front of my "low riding" civic pretty badly. Accident 2) Drunk, raining, no street lights, sharp curve, front wheel drive, off the road and ran into a school. Police showed up, helped get my car un-stuck, and helped my drunk ass back in the car. No bribe or anything. Accident 3) T-boned another motorcycle doing 80k while riding my Honda Wave 125. Had a helmet on good thing. The woman on the other bike was pregnant and lost the baby. Her husband ended up having to pay for my bike to be fixed, as he was crossing in a no crosing zone. Once you drive in Thailand for an extended period of time, you will never be able to drive anywhere else. Either you are offensive and break the so called rules, or you are always the last guy in line.

I have fond memories thinking on how I got my Thai Driving Licence. Went there and was asked to take an eye test which basicly was a set of three pictures with different colors. I had to to tell the person which color was which (Red, Yellow, Green................duh) Second was the test. They gave me the complete answer booklet before the test and and said I can read it as long as I want and then take the test. And ohh boy did they have pathetic questions in there. After that I took my test, passed 30/30. You have to get 20 out of 30 right. Now having said that I know people who have failed this test 4 times.... The practical test was fun, I went there and the guy said if I was in a hurry, I said yes and he said "ok you give me 500 Baht and you can pass" I said ok, gave him the money and he signed my Drivers Licence. All in all it was a fun experience that took less then 2 hours (including waiting time). Only problem is that you have to re-register the damn thing every year, which I promptly forgot. So I just drive without a licence, who cares, TIT. Butz

Likewise involved in multiple accidents/traffic violations, i always make sure that i have a licence when driving. I always think that it would be an entirely different scenario if a person's life would be lost. A valid Thai driving licence also comes in handy for identification purposes in lieu of the bulky passport. Yearly renewal is inconvenient but i always believe that it's worth the effort to maintain one when driving in Thailand.

Down here in Phuket there are lots of checkpoints and stops and no license = fine... Bribes simply dont seem to work. At first they were totally happy with a UK pink card picture licence, but recently these have been refused and onl;y international and thai licenses are accepted.

Guys, getting an international license seems the easiest (well, if you don't live in LOS, as it's renewable every year), and is valid everywhere except the issuing country. Harry

My little 2 bath worth, Yes Krypto "its all about the benjamins' in here but the DL is really easy to get as a conversion from your current licence from your home country. It is just spending 1 hour in the office down sukhumvit xx (Close to bangna) with an agent to help you with the process. I agree that it never a good idea to show your DL to any cop but the main advantage these days is that you can use it to pass any bouncer asking for a Passport. Drawback, DL is no longer lifetime and have to be renew every year Cheers,

I just got a Thai driver's license. Well when I say I got one, my secretary got it for me. It cost Bt2000 and is valid for one year (my secretary tells me the normal cost is Bt5000). I just signed a couple of documents, didnt have to give a copy of any other license (international or otherwise). If I had known it was this easy, I would have got one earlier!!
