Just got back from Poipet. I'd had a work permit for years and cancelled it last Friday. Anyway, rather than use a service I decided to do it myself for the adventure. What a drag.

I'd been through Poipet a few times on my way further into Cambodia over the years with a re entry on a nonB. But this was purely a 30 day run. Necessary while as my other nonB for my business can't be ready yet.

I had trouble leaving Thailand and re entering. I can say that it seemed that because I speak Thai fairly fluently and had work permit type stamps in my passport I was able to pull it off---otherwise, I don't know. They all, the police, were quite serious about this regulation which they say they've been ordered to enforce since April 1st. That you have to have proof of a ticket out of Thailand in order to come in. I had to talk to them at length. Finally, they said, as a favor to me, they'd let me back in this time.

I saw a couple guys, Asian and Western, getting this problem and it looked almost like they weren't being allowed. Though they did seem a bit forgiving, and probably let them in because the enforcement was so recent and they, like me, may not have heard of it yet. One policewoman kindly gave me a handful of small photocopies of the regulation "to give my friends back in Bangkok and warn them".

Why did you cancel your work permit?

Obviously this is your first VOA. In the next 180 days you may stay 90 on a VOA.

So I don't understand why they were given you a hard time.

What was in 'the warning'?

If somebody stayed over 90 days in the 180 days period ( and made at least 3 VOA runs) and you haven't heard of this new 1 October rule, you might have been living in a cave...

So how do you apply for a Non B without a proper visa?

Thanks Dr Love and DaffyDuck for your prompt responses.

To answer:

DaffyDuck, I had to cancel my work permit as I ceased working for the company that issued it. That was on March 30. Now I am waiting for my own company to finish registration so that I can obtain, with proper paperwork, a nonB from it. During this time I had to do a visa run (you have 7 days to leave the country or reapply for a nonB after cancelling a work permit, as I understand it). That may answer some of the Dr's questions too.

I haven't been living in a cave. Well, maybe a bit now and then. I hadn't done a visa run in years, as I mentioned. I know the 90 day rule etc of course. But this concerns a regulation newly enforced (so I was told) that one must have proof of leaving the country (air ticket, etc) to come back in. That seems to be why they gave me the hassle.

Anyway, that was my experience today. Hope it helps. A Phillipino I met on the way back showed me a nice letter from a travel agency he used successfully after just hearing about it since April 1st. In fact the officer also showed me a big handful of similar copies, that I should have one like that next time...

Thanks Seajohn.

The rule as per April 1st was unknown to me too.

What's with all the posts I'm seeing on other sites stating that getting a visa exempt stamp, free 30 day stamp, will now require proof of onward travel out of the country within 30 days?
Some friends have been getting warnings about this new enforcement on there last run to PoiPet, and papers handed to them explaining it. One other didn't get a warning, but did get the paper explaining it at another crossing.

Anyone know about this yet?

It seems Koolbreez' concerns were right.

Yeah, I was shocked. I've tried to keep abreast of all these changing rules, but that really threw me. As I said, after long conversations there and showing them my previous documents, they made me feel lucky they were letting me back in!

IMPORTANT! (Posted in two threads).

I just found out the 3*30 VOA and 3*30 TR scheme does not work.

You can stay 90 days within 6 months which is longer than 180 days. You will have days short...

Perhaps the best way is to get another extension for 7 days...

Last time I came into Thailand (BKK this January) the immigration officer wanted to know when I was leaving. He also asked me for my boarding pass from the incoming flight. After I told him, he huffed a bit and then stamped my passport.

Question for the forum: most airlines now issue e-tickets, not paper tickets. Will showing a copy of your e-ticket confirmation be good enough? Getting a paper ticket would be a real pain (and also an additional cost).

E-tickets would be just fine.

when entering the kingdom, they can always demand proof of onward travel. this rule has been around for ages, but hardly ever enforced. it applies to many countries in the world, btw.

if you cannot show proof, they can refuse to let you into the country. so be prepared. (in fact, at some airports when you check in they will ask for the proof, too, and have the right to not admit you on the flight if you do not have the necessary documents!)

This happened to me last October, returning to the Kingdom from Australia. The bureaucrats at the Thai Air counter refused to permit me to board my flight without proof of an onward flight. I actually had to go across the concourse to a travel agency and buy a flight (before the expiration of the 30 day visa period) to Malaysia.

Complete pain in the ass.
