My brother-in-law retired from teaching 2 years ago, and has been recruited for this program. The Thai government is flying him over for interviews, and to convince him to teach, and head a department, at more than the bt83000 a month. He's taking the free trip, and will do all the interviews, but as it is now he's retired, and has no interest in any of it....lololol, but as he says, he'd be a fool to pass up a free trip.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 14 April 2011 :- Bangkok English school flirts with Chinese market ================================ A local English language institution is introducing long-distance online learning courses to China to tap into dramatically growing demand there for English teachers and courses in remote areas. Fun Language International (Thailand) has been providing English teachers and curricula for children in both public and private schools in Greater Bangkok since 1997. Managing director Tongjai Tangsanga said it was cooperating with its partners in China - Leap School and an investor from Hong Kong - to develop interactive English classes via the internet. It has set up a 10-million-baht studio in Shanghai where English-speaking teachers are filmed and broadcasts sent to schools in Shanghai's suburbs. Mr Tongjai said China's education market had improved markedly after the country held the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008. Demand for English teachers and courses is rising significantly, and many international English teaching institutions are setting up shop in Beijing and Shanghai. Suburban schools still lack native English teachers as most prefer to live near city centres. "Remote schools have no other alternatives in finding English teachers than online learning," he said. However, the Chinese market is still unfamiliar with the company's style, which emphasises speaking and listening skill rather than tutoring for exams. Many schools are hesitant to invest in facilities like projectors or high-speed internet connections, but Mr Tongjai insists online classes can save schools money in the long term. He estimated Chinese schools might have to spend 9,000 yuan per month to hire a full-time foreign teacher, but online classes only cost 2,000 yuan per month. Fun Language started broadcasting its courses to six schools in Shanghai suburbs last October. It aims to increase the number to 24 by the end of this year. China's industrial city of Tianjin and Vietnam are also in the company's business expansion plan. While online classes can be broadcast to many destinations at the same time, Mr Tongjai admitted it was quite difficult to make young students simultaneously keep up with the lesson. "Online classes still rely on support from real teachers in the classroom to assure that all students will follow the lesson," he said. Curriculum development is a focal point for the school as it believes it is essential for learning. It develops its own books, flashcards, and evaluation forms. Fun Language operates two branches in the Phahon Yothin and Sukhumvit areas and is considering adding up to four more as well as opening franchised branches in the next few years.

Report from The Nation dated 19 December 2011 :- Teaching of English to be ramped up ======================= Students will be encouraged to speak English every week as part of the English Speaking Year 2012 project. "At least one day per week, teachers and students must use English in communications through various activities," Education Minister Woravat Auapinyakul said last week. The project will kick off on December 26 with cooperation from foreign embassies and other institutions, said Sasithara Pichaicharnnarong, permanent secretary of the ministry. Woravat said the project would prepare Thailand for the advent of the Asean Economic Community in 2015. The English Speaking Year project would stimulate greater use of the international language by students in all public schools, he said. "For example, there will be English corner or English village. Or students will be sent to receive training as guides," he said. The permanent secretary has been assigned to consult with the other agencies to provide training for teachers in organising activities for promoting English speaking. The teacher training will be provided by the Basic Education Commission, Vocational Education Commission and Private Education Commission. Practising English speaking would be given priority before studying grammar. Sasithara said the project would be launched nationwide with the training of teachers so that they could communicate in English. Teachers would join activities of foreign embassies or foreign institutions as well as receive training from representatives of Englishlanguage institutions and international schools. The ministry would persuade teachers to participate in the project by surveying schools' readiness and offering rewards for successful schools. The schools would be classified by colour - blue representing schools not ready, green fairly ready and pink very ready. Teachers at pink schools might be rewarded with training in other Asean countries or the chance to go on fieldtrips to the countries, she added.

This is the follow up to the program the government launched at the beginning of the year to hire 300 native English teachers at bt82,000 a month on a one year contract to train teachers in English instruction techniques. My brother-in-law was recruited for this program, and flown over here on Thai Airways for interviews. He had just retired from 31 years of teaching, and was being heavily recruited for this program. He took the trip, who wouldn't, but turned down the offer. It wasn't that he didn't like the offer, and the system set up for the project. Recent loss of family just didn't make this a priority in his life now. The pay was good though, for Thailand teaching.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 8 January 2012 :- Poor English skills could leave Thais out in cold UNIVERSITIES 'MUST IMPROVE TEACHING BEFORE ASEAN COMMUNITY LAUNCHES' ====================================== Thailand may find itself at a disadvantage because of inferior English skills when Southeast Asia becomes a single community, academics and an industrialist have warned. The launch of the Asean Community in 2015 will see a free flow of professionals and skilled workers among the 10 member states of the grouping. Once the community is formed, Thais will be able to look for jobs outside the country but they will have to brace themselves for challenges from regional competitors over positions in multinational and international organisations based in Thailand that require English as the working language. This could pose a particular challenge for university students who will be first-time job seekers by that time. "People from other Southeast Asian countries will compete with Thais for jobs. It's a fact," said Paron Israsena, who sits on several university councils including those of Chulalongkorn and Chiang Mai. "If we want to be able to compete with other Southeast Asian countries, we have to start at universities now," said Mr Paron. He pointed to English skills as an obvious weakness of Thai university graduates that needs to be urgently addressed. "Most Thai students coming out of universities cannot communicate in English," said Mr Paron, who is also the president of the Darunsikkhalai School for Innovative Learning. The old way of teaching English, which starts with grammar, must be scrapped and replaced with an emphasis on listening and speaking skills so that students are encouraged to speak up, Mr Paron said. He says the country needs to adopt a lifetime learning process and knowledge-based society vision to make it more competitive in the face of increasing regional competition. "Competitiveness is the key success factor for Thailand in the Asean Community," he said. The Education Ministry is apparently aware of the challenges to come when the Asean Community takes off. Its website _ http://www.moe.go.th _ reminds readers of the move towards one community. The Association of University Presidents agreed on Dec 25 that they will adjust their semesters to be in line with the system used by other universities in the region. By 2015, the first semester will run from September to December, instead of from June to October as is currently the case. The second semester will run from January to May. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra last month urged the ministry to improve the tertiary curriculum to better prepare university students for competition in the job market in 2015. More importantly, the ministry has set 2012 as the English Speaking Year. Its aim is to encourage students to converse in English every Monday. Chinnapat Bhumirat, secretary-general of the Office of the Basic Education Commission, admitted that English skills were not a competitive advantage for Thais but hoped the country still had enough time to prepare itself for the eventual change. "We have a problem with the English language. Countries such as Singapore and the Philippines hold an edge," Mr Chinnapat said at a forum on Thai education and the Asean Community held in September. "We still have three years to go to produce qualified personnel." At the same forum, however, Thavorn Chalassathien deputy secretary-general of the Federation of Thai Industries, called for a broader-based skills improvement. He urged the government to boost skills for workers and technicians to help keep industries in Thailand and to compete with other countries that can offer cheaper labour costs as their advantage to lure investors away from the Kingdom. "Don't think only about the [English] language. What we really need is skills development," he said.
