Thanks for this haam I must say this is a theme I am picking up quite a bit and not just from this forum. I am considering widening my horizons to encompass more developed economies such as HK and SIN. ŬI guess the hardest thing for me to balance is my business sense against a personal feeling that for once in my life I should just f******g do something that I want to do (albeit taking a big risk) rather than playing it too safe, I figure at 34 I can afford to make 1 or 2 big mistakes and bounce back but wouldn't necessarily feel able to take such risks if I was much the other side of 40. I had reached the same conclusions re: bars, restaurants etc. these are extremely competitive industries in which i don't have a great deal of experience (perhaps one of the drawbacks of having spent too much time in a large corporate environment). ŬThat said I have always had a hankering to own a hotel... Anyway thanks again for the constructive advice, I know my original enquiry (especially as a newbie here) may have come across as naive, but I didnt really want to write a two page essay on what I already did and didn't know about the thai business climate and local culture.

hey bucks, I'm glad you saw it as constructive. Just to muddy the waters, the idea of just DOING it, particularly if you can afford to make mistakes, is the only REAL way to become an 'old hand' in Thailand. ŬI regret not jumping in 20 years ago, when I could've afforded some mistakes. ŬThere are a few guys around who have made it, starting out with a few thousand, or less, but with a burning desire to stay in Thailand, and not many liabilities to start with. If you can take even 6 months off, rent an apartment in a non-tourist area, travel and live like a local, and especially, learn the language, you will be in a much better position to decide if you have that kind of motivation. But you gotta love it for what it is, or you'll never do it. good luck haam sup

bucksfun, Just as a thought, given your core business is more likely aligned with multi national companies and their needs, particularly ones with new ventures into the more under-developed countires, why not consider reseraching which MNCs are currently going where(re: under developed countries) and which ones closely match with your consultant expertise. My view is that thailand already has the consultant resources available to them in Thailand, either from local companies or expatriate ones. The country may be poor in some aspects but is not uneducated in others. You may find a possibility in an adjoining country or within the greater south east - far east region, but not necessarily in Thailand. Can always holiday it to bangkok every month if you need to. If your to carefull, you will turn around and see a 50++ guy starring back at you. Figure out a product, service you can export and just DO IT. You are young enough to make mistakes and recover. 1 day until I'm reloaded into the Thai Matrix, Phuket version
