There is a good book shop in the soi next to Villa supermarket on Sukhumvit (about soi 31). The map is available there for Bt157.
Outside is a great noodle stand which is 'frequented by 'in the know' back packers who can advise on cross border gem trading from Myanmar. With a little effort you should be able to self-finance your trip and still have a few baht leftover for a ST.

Just curious - aside from the scenic aspects, but why do you have no issues supporting a govt like Myanmar financially with your visit?
Never been there. Just thought I would peddle over there on the mountain bike and have a look. Should be cheaper than BKK. Yeah I know, not a real good Govt.

PLEASE tell me you're kidding......180 Baht for a map?? What a rip-off. Even B157 is a stretch. What I do is borrow maps from a backpacker acquaintance of mine and photocopy them, free of any charge. 180 baht for a map, jeez.....I guess there really is a sucker born every minute.

I do not have any friends or mates over here that I can borrow or sponge off.
So for my journey on the mountain bike to Myanmar because of the high cost of living in BKK, I have to resort to obtaining and collating as much information as possible for a safe and rewarding trip.
If it means spending 180b for a very good map, I have made a good investment. BTW GS, if you wish a copy of this map I would only be too pleased to let you have a copy.

I did check that shop out and in particular that map. It is a good topo map but unfortunately does not show all the river & creek crossings or the variants of mountain ranges, thanks anyhow.

barrafish, i'd reconsider this if I were you. Myanmar is no place for a foreigner to live and if it's only economic reasons that are making you consider this, you need to be aware that the Myanmar government last week increased fuel prices by something like 900% (after subsidising them for years).
That alone will increase prices across the board for everything else.
If you want cheaper, leave bkk and go to Chiang Mai, Pattaya or Isaan.
