I think it's a good idea to clarify what the charge is and ask to see the meter before you sign the contract. This should put them on alert that you aren't just going to pay whatever they might happen to make up for the month.

yo, the electricity matter has been adequatly addressed here by several people: 1. ask what is charge per unit? 2. use a fan during the day 3. if you see a descrepensy...bring it up! 4. for a $6500baht a month studio, 1000-1200baht will keep you adequatley chilled. 5. if possible...rent a condo from someone that you pay utilities directly to the government...you can run 24/7 for the same price. I did not see one important utility mentioned...and it burned me bad. Telephone - I am sure you have a cell phone, but if you run out of credit dont ever pick up the apartment phone or it will become habit. My first months living in bkk (I didnt get a cell for the first 2 months) my bill was over 6000baht each month (insert what a dumbass person I am comment here ). cheers, atl

atl, Suggestion for the telephone. Sign up for a 1 yr contract with 'True' and have a dedicated land line put in your room. My cost is 100b to apartment management and 100b rental to True. I did sign up for internet use at 850b month and the line came with a splitter for phone use. Phone calls to anywhere in LOS, including fixed phones and mobiles are charged at 3b minute and if you call overseas, dial 009 then your country code. OS call's are 8b minute. Just a suggestion. 6000b month for phones, ouch.

barra, this was early 2002 and I was not aware of "true" but I lived at "Patumwan House" which I have raved about for 1 to 2 month stays on this forum. However, they had an insane surcharge for calls to cell phones and I did get burned...12,000 + baht over 2 months...then I bought a nokia at MBK for 6000baht and problem was solved. my point was just to keep that in mind because with such inexpensive rent...these landlords (especially thai/chinese) try and get their baht other ways. No offense to Thaksin and other thai/chinese (well maybe to thaksin LOL!) atl
