I think I would rather have a root canal than live up-country. It is more exciting watching rice grow and paint dry. If you haven't already, you better live there for a couple of weeks to see if you appreciate this lifestyle. I mean most go to sleep at dusk (7:30 to 8:00 PM) then arise to the cocks crowing at 4:00 AM, if you sleep in to 7:00 AM forget about getting food at the local market as they are closing their doors since being opened at 4:00 AM. If you are not an EARLY morning person country life is not for you. Salary will be cheap, but so is everything else so you should be OK in that regard. While some things sound good in theory it is best to experience it for a while first hand before taking the plunge.

Shreddie, I second atl's excellent advice to have a look at ajarn.com. However, I am not clear about how you expect to stay here legally. There is no doubt that some upcountry schools would love to have someone qualified to teach English at their disposal. The Ministry of Education, however, is pretty adamant about degrees being presented before issuing the teaching permit. And the Department of Labor definitely wants it before they will issue you a work permit, with Immigration right on their heels, regarding your permit to stay. If you have some other qualification for a different long-term visa, like an O-A or something, you would be golden. But teaching without a work permit is not what it used to be, i.e., safe, and you should think long and hard about whether you want that kind of liability poised over your head... As for living upcountry, strangely, I LOVED living in Nong Khai, because there is a bit of activity there, and plenty of stimulation, and places to explore. But living in an isolated mooban in the middle of Issan might be less than amusing. Still, a root canal? I'll take the mooban. hs

I want to stress that I am not an expert on immigration/work permit matters by ANY means. I merely relate what has been my experience. While in Nong Khai, I actually worked at a school, and had to patiently explain to the Immigration and Labor Ministry people that I was administering their computer network, NOT teaching, and so didn't need the teaching permit, and all the attendant paperwork. I guess in their minds, school job = teaching...sigh. hs

Plenty of teaching jobs upcountry, if that's what you want; they are government schools and work permit etc apps are facilitated for them there. Yes, many are advertised on sites such as the one mentioned above. Though I find too many lunatics on the site's forum--rumor mongers and disassociated types, I mean. An upcountry city, such as I think Haam Sup alludes to, would be more exciting though, from a nightlife perspective, and other perspectives, too--because ThaidUp, in my experience, makes accurate points about the really out-of-town locations. Life in a village, especially with the family, Oh!: You could go nuts in a few days. But with Shredded Wheat's supplement, you could have enough travel and enough insulation (internet wired in, for instance) and the rare thing in a village, privacy, to make life more amusing. On a positive note, anyone who's even just visited an upcountry school or dealt with the children' there knows how sweet they are and how wondrously glad they are to see you and how rewarding it could possibly be to teach them anything in the fun way Thais respond to.

I am little confused on why anyone would want to live "upcountry". No nightlife, limited jobs-no tech, no beaches, etc. Where is DG in all of this? Usually, he pipes in with some story about how he had an orgy with three 21 yo fruit sellers he met at a bus stop.

Complex, but I don't believe the US Treasury is so concerned about the dip in the dollar...

Certainly not under its current leadership. US exporters are rakeing it in hand over fist. But this was a thread about life in BKK, and the dollar's plunge, especially against the baht, certainly affects the standard of living for those coming here with greenbacks... AS for the Thug's comment about living upcountry, well, need I say that not EVERYONE comes to Thailand to limit their travels to Walking Street, and Sukhumvit, between soi 1 and Cowboy... And there IS nightlife scattered around, Isaan, but it's just a bit more difficult to find. Are not bang-fai a form of tech? And the Mekong has plenty of beaches, albeit devoid of surfable waves... Jeez, some guys need it handed to them on a platter...

To quote Italiathug............."Where is DG in all of this? Usually, he pipes in with some story about how he had an orgy with three 21 yo fruit sellers he met at a bus stop. " I think he got stuck on composing the story about being way-laid by three 84 year old viagra sellers on the ring road of his village and then gave up. Either that, or he has found a true companion for life ..........for the moment at some un-named bus stop. In time, all will be revealed, I am sure of it.

Depends on your situation and you career. I work for a bank in Singapore and get shuttled around a bit. Been doing a lot more work in Vietnam and China for the last year or so. Still, when I'm in BKK the bars are open as the girls legs and the punters are still filling some of them. Mates stationed in BKK have a good salary and, for them, nothing has changed. Their mystery....if the US$ is so low, why haven't the prices of some things come down? The obvious answer is that the customer is being cased at both ends!! Seems holiday makers are still coming even in the low season. Not much has increased in price. The UK pound has changed little, the dollar seems hardest hit but the bars still ring with american accents.
