nothing wrong with living on Suk. if you can maintain your self-control

but that usually finds itself an all too difficult task for the newbie resident

I was talking to a friend today who's been here nearly as long as me & he has just started to look for a new job, says his MD is driving him ape-shit because the MD is an idiot, LOL

well, he said that not only is the market tough for expats but also Thais that leave the company are not coming up with jobs several months after leaving
that includes their personnel manager who you would think would be well-versed in the skill of job-hunting

My two-cents on the issue.

First is that if you want to work in the fields you mentioned (secretary, sales, relationship manager, bank work) you will probably have to know some Thai. Additionally the company will have to be an MNC that requires someone bilingual (Thai-English).

If you do not meet those qualifications then the odds of picking up a job are very low. Many of the positions that would allow a non-Thai speaker would require specialized qualifications (Engineering, CPA, CFM, etc.).

For the more mundane jobs (Financial Analyst, Project Manager, etc.) the MNC will rotate people in from their home operations if they do not want to hire a local.

I also echo the Work Permit statement of LY. My background is that I run an IT Consulting Firm in Singapore (I am a PR). When I have projects in LOS I hire local people or those with existing work permits (usually Indian as it seems that some treaties between India and Thailand makes it easier for them to get a permit).

My involvement is very minimal with short term visits for meetings and review sessions. The work I actually do is done remotely from Singapore and either sent to my team or personally delivered when I am in for a meeting. Why do I do it this way? The reason is that it can be damn near impossible to get a Work Permit or even a Business Visa in Thailand if the work you do can be performed by locals.

And how did I become a PR in Singapore? I was sent there by a US MNC when I worked in their corporate offices in Los Angeles.

IMHO if you want to work in LOS, spend your time trolling for jobs in a UK MNC that has the potential of posting you in SE Asia...

Thanks for all input.

I have personally decided that i'm just going for a holiday, I think my friend has now also come round to that idea based on all feedback received and taking everything into account.

Not to say that he wont have a look around and speak to some people when we get there, but it is now a well needed vacation, instead of a long term living plan.

We will be staying in hotels, rather than renting apartments etc

Thanks for everyones input
