It doesn't matter where you go in the world farming his hard work. The mechanization of farming does not make it any easier, it just makes it so you can branch into other ventures.
DG. a tractor does not increase crop yeald, it just makes the process of plowing, or harvesting, faster. A tractor has very little bearing on crop yeald. It does not make the crop bigger. Unless the farmer can get more land to farm, a tractor actually makes the farmer more lazy. He has more free time because of the tractor.
To increase your crop yeald you usually have to change to a higher yeald seed variety, and increase your fertalizer application, using a higher nitrogen content fertalizer. The tractor itself has little effect on yeald. It's all about nitrogen sulfate, and access to that. It is controlled worldwide. There are some countries that can't even get it, thus having to rely on animal waste for fertalizing their crops, and getting lower yealds.
Wheat farming is very similar to rice farming, and that is what I grew up doing. Our town was the center of some of the largest wheat cultivation in the USA, and instrumental in innovation, and increased crop yeald technology.
It's nice that your wife, and family, are able to branch out into other money making activities, and have your money to do it with, but the majority of farmers don't have, and never will have, those opportunities. That is NEVER. Not because they don't have ideas, there are plenty of those, but they simply do not have the ability to make it happen. They don't have the money, or the extra land, or the workers.
The biggy is the money. Sure they can go to a loanshark, but then the loanshark gets all the profit, or like most times, ends up owning the farm. They can get the money from government programs, but as we all see that money is funnelled off through corruption, with none left for the farmer. 90% of the emergency flood money this year simply dissapeared into the corruption network, just like all other government money.
That is why I say NEVER. They will never have an oportunity to improve themselves. The government will never allow it. Then people loose money, and that will never happen. People end up dead when you mess with the wrong people's money source.
Your wife's family might make some extra money, and there will be people trying to get it, then the farmers that hire them will get lazy with their extra free time. You getting the tractor can realistically have negative effects on the community as a whole.....hahahaha.

I should also enlighten you that Money is not always the payment or loan sharks the source-
Forinstance, a relation might borrow the money (usually about 3000- 10,000 baht)..... needed.
Rice is also a form of currency, and a 90 kilogram sack of grade 2 rice will get you some help.
Most pledge a few bags to get what they need-
Alternatively, in our area a few head of cattle are given as surity-

This is done prior to the first full moon in July-
That is again a date where monks are accepted as novices (first full moon in July)
We see a great increase of production by renting out the tractor-
Firstly, many are older men now- laziness is simply a wrong and silly assumption -
Plowing a Field in one day as opposed to 10 is plain advantagous-
The cost of a rented tractor is 1000 baht -
We accept payment later (we are not loan sharks) The rice yeild is most certainly higher where Tractors are used.
Why ?
Well many do a second crop straight after first - knowing that a harvest by late october gives them time to do a second crop if conditions are favorable - the dry months in some regions dont happen to late march -
The Rainy season often now starts as early as Late June in the mid north east-
Issaan Might be making you think Kool Breeze all Thai farmers are lazy-
While even Issaan has its fair share of them remember Rain fall is crucial to crops as is land wealth-
The bottom line is our region many people own both alot of land and cattle- it is not a poorer part of Thailand-
Its not saving a village or making anyone lazy-
My wife knows who is crediable and worthy-
Few are lazy - this silly myth here is just what you guys are seeing in some other parts of thailand-
My experieces are the Topic here and its area are very hard working-
We pay about 20 cambodians 150 baht each a day to harvest-
We also allow others to use them and we pay (but their fee is paid in Rice..on harvest)
Relations also help each other-
A small Community often works out its own business-
We dont have Loan sharks operating as there is no need for them-

Even up near mai sai on the north western borders next to Burma the farmers have more farming ability than ever before-
As for ruthless dealers and goverment hacks-
You Guys are confusing the "land Goverment loans families" to private land-
In very poor regions some land is not owned by farmers but zoned by goverment for them to use-
In the end it makes no sense to say that a tractor is of no help in yeilding better outcomes-
Sure you stick to saying the "crop itself" does not yeild more-
But what if it cant be even ploughed?
Many farmers are getting simply long in the tooth (old)
Sometimes one crop is a huge task for their family-
Tractors make This idea of even two possible-
Land also diffcult to plough (not all land is easy to plough)
There are 100 circumstances I have seen where a tractor ends with the Farmer yeilding a better return.
One Glaring example is her deceased grand father who stop farming 5 years ago (before his death) his block of land-
We ploughed and seeded his field for him using the tractor-
Rougly 20 others have rented it for a spell so it frees up family members to do more important tasks-
Yeild is depended on labor and care of crop and conditions-
if unexpected rains open a window to grow a second crop sometimes the tractor quickly allows that oppurtunity-
Kool Breeze if you know and experience lazy farmers my guess is you somewhere near Khon kaen-

Kuri kai doesnt have lazy people full stop-
