With 2 similar brake malfunctions just in the shakedown runs, someone in Thai Transportation needs to check the manufacturer's prior safety records - sounds like a serious design problem.

doest sound like equipment malfunction to me it sounds like the driver engaged the parking brake at the station and did not release it when he left

if thats all the problems there got then that doesnt worry me for such a complex piece of kit

trials and testing are exactly what it sounds like you can simulate things on computers till the cows come home but until you put nut to bolt there are no absolute guarentees it will work !!!!!!!

If I am not mistaken these train sets are from a reputable european contractor with a long history of successful projects behind them.
Operational trials will always have teething problems even on systems that have been used successfully elsewhere. It's the nature of the beast.
Nothing to be alarmed about.
One thing the contractors should be aware of is not to take the operators word for how the problem started. Asians are notorious for being economical with the truth when something goes wrong - even when they have done nothing wrong themselves! I think it's called 'face'.
As an engineer myself, who occasionally needs to investigate problems (some quite serious) this behaviour is an unnecessary hindrance and can be time-consuming & extremely frustrating.

Based on the story:

"...the parking brake became engaged while the train was running...engineers were investigating the cause of the malfunction. Preliminary checks revealed it was caused by a problem in the brake's air-pressure system."

Now if the driver is lying as DSB suggests, and the preliminary check is a further lie, than that would be a different story.

Certainly possible - after all TIT!

So it is now open to much fanfare and ceremony.

For anyone who saw it on TV (hours of live programming) you will have seen the Governor of MRTA (K. Praphat) assist the King with pressing a mouse on a screen to start operations.

Then the Governor said "Wait a minute" and some embarrased grins before the driver started up and the "first" train trundled from the depot into the ramp down into Rama IX station and the trains were off.

His Majesty has a long interest in trains. He used to ride a model steam loco around the Palace as a kid and has taken a keen interest in solving the traffic problems of Bnagkok through efficient transport links.

The Governor and cPM Taksin also gave assurances that another 90km (only 20km were opened) would be finished in the next six years, recorded by the cameras.

The quality is of course exceptional and at Baht 110 billion (of Japanese money) the system has been built to the highest international standards. Users will note the finishes are dominated by granite, stainless steel and glass.

I find the ride smoother than BTS as the alignment does not follow the street plan as closely as the BTS.

The trains themselves are very similair to BTS trains, same Siemens factory etc.

Until the Queen's birthday the fare will be 10 Baht regardless of distance. I was somewhat intrigued by the tokens for single journeys. They look like small plastic coins but contain electronic tags. To enter you wave them at the turnstile and to exit you deposit them in a slot. Hats off to the Germans, another advance in ticketing in Bangkok.

Arriving at Hua Lamphong I transited to the SRT Station smoothly through the underghround adits and escalators, pausing to study the nameboard with the 15,000 project participants.

And what are those names in Times New Roman font? They look like British, German, Japanese and a host of other nationalities. And where were they at the ceremony? Standing at the back where the cameras could not see them.

If you travel on the north line the stations look very nice, as BKK Banger says all granite etc, but the south line from Rama 9 to Hua Lampong looks like a giant gents loo. I guess that they wont to save money or the funds were transfered else where?

Well Glosterboy you do indeed have a point.

The North half of the line was built under a seperate contract and being design and build the contractor proposed at tender cladding everything in granite.

The South half was let to a more wily bunch who proposed cheap ceramic tiles on the walls, terrazzo on the floors and bare concrete externally. What you see in the Gentlemen's loo is an upgrade.

Apparently the British architects spent many a long night arguing over schemes to give each station a distinctive feel using a pallette of strong colours.

For instance did you note the royal yellow used at QSNCC Station? Wow, hardly overwhelming.

And the stainless columns at QSNCC? Very retro, may have been more at home at Sukhumvit outside Cowboy.

In fact the material are of the highest quality, those are not ordinary tiles.

Still all looks grey. Architects............
