...Friends of mine overstayed there visa in October by three days (they reckoned it would work out cheaper) and paid a fine, left - no Problem - They entered LOS about a week ago and got a serious third degree at immigration re the overstay. They were clearly warned not to overstay again.

The one thing I learned a LONG time while travelling, is that it's always good to:
-keep a low-profile
-not show up on any government lists
-respect the rules of the land.
Aside from the fees for overstaying, from what I see here, a notation is made in your file, and it goes on your permanent record - that's a definite 'no-no', as you're pretty much branded.

This might have meant nothing in previous times (and might mean again nothing in the future), but at this point in time, such notations can come to haunt you (and it seems they do).

So, was it worth for your friends being Cheap Charlies and 'saving some money' by paying the overstay fees, instead? I mean, what's the difference between extension fee, and overstay fee - what, like $20 US? Woo-hoo!

I guess the reason most people overstay (those that live here, anyway) is that come the day for the visa run they find they have other & more important things to do. And then - once you're over anyway - it's very easy to let the matter drift for a while. Dr Love is quite right that the likelihood of a cop checking your passport is very low. At least it is if you don't look like an obvious dopehead, troublemaker or general pain in the arse.

So far I've accumulated 4 overstays in my passport. One of these lasted a long time. The stamps record the fine you've been required to pay, and I think their main purpose is to show any future official that your previous overstay has been properly processed and liquidated. I have never had the slightest problem (either at the airport or other entry-points) with my overstay stamps - in fact, no immigration official has ever even mentioned them.

Overstays are best avoided, obviously. Sometimes, if you have other obligations, it's a bit difficult. Most residents don't get hysterical about them because they know that staying out of trouble in Thailand is easy provided you conduct yourself in a way Thais don't find objectionable.

It's worth remembering that there ARE quite a lot of farangs in LOS who are criminals or near-criminals, and quite a few more who contrive to look 'undesirable' (some of the guys you see on Sukhumvit would attract the cops' attention practically anywhere). Then you get people who seem to have a genius for rubbing Thais up the wrong way and don't have the first clue about how to handle Thai officialdom. If you insist on being filthy, loud, disrespectful or arrogant (it's my holiday, I know my rights and and I'll do what I want in your craphole of a country) you will attract hassle or worse like a magnet. Otherwise, I still think it's a paranoid myth that the Thais are out to 'get' foreigners.

He obviously has not met Dr. Love, who seems to have arrived in BKK via Woodstock (no offense intended, doc. I like your style.)

Well, possibly Dr Love is just too frightening to be approached.

Yeah, but come on - there is such a thing as 'planning' - at least I do know how long I intend to stay, and if I should end up seeing that I would overstay, it's quite possible to make time BEFORE the very last day. It's this thing called 'planning' that a lot of the 'bitter' farangs tend to hold over the 'Thai Mentality'. In other words, it's a pretty difficult leg to stand on bitching about how 'the Thais' are all flakey, late, and unreliable - when farangs do the same, or worse. Just my obviously undervalued $0.02

This is good advice that ought to, I believe, apply to all countries, and I agree on some of the elements seen on Sukhumwit - If that was the only judge of farangs, I'd want them gone as well

Yeah, I agree, I think there's very little anti-farang conspiracy going on (except for the arabs, maybe)

Maybe an ignorant question from a supposedly "senior" member of the forum, but this thread has me wondering:

I may end up in LOS in a couple of months, and may be staying with my TGF in her apartment for several months. This means that whatever visa I get from here will probably need to be extended when I get there. But this begs the question, if LOS requires a return ticket, and I don't know the return date, what is the best way to structure the airline ticket.

Moreover, since I am not employed in Thailand, but may also not be a "short term" guest, will that have any effect on my wanting to do the eventual border runs for the monthly stamp? Will I run into queries about his from the boys at the Poipet station, for instance? Is there a preferred visa that I should start with, e.g., monthly (jumping off the plane), versus, 60+ day?

Cheap Chalee Mai Dee
BB,
Go for the tourist visa 60 day. That will give you more time initially. Then you can do tourist visa runs and then you will have the 60 days on each return. If your going to be here for 6 months hen all you have to do is initial visa and possible 1 visa run.

Cheap Chalee,

Thanks, so I can get a 60 day "extension" at Poipet, for example, or do I just fill out new forms? I've had my passport stamped coming in from Burma, Laos, and Cambodia, but they always give me the usual 30 days. Can I simply request 60 days, or is there am additional charge at the border to do that?

I can confirm the remarks Arcadius made above about "consequences" of having overstay stamps in your passport: there are none, in my experience. I have several (as do family members) and they have never been questioned.

Note that the standard 30-day visa can be extended at the Suan Plu immigration department. You must go before expiration of your visa, but you can get a 14-day extension (1,900 baht). You can then apply for a second extension of 7 days (same fee). This works out to a slight savings over the normal overstay penalty fee of 200 baht per day, and it keeps you legal.
