Quote: from Kryptonite on 9:56 am on Sep. 2, 2003 I used to teach English to the children in my housing area. No TEFL required. I did it on Saturday & Sunday mornings. I charged 40 baht for two hours. Each day I taught for two hours. I had about 15 - 20 children each day. Nice little set up until the kids start getting out of hand. This paid for my beer, TTM & extras. As long as you don't advertise, and keep it relatively small scale, you would be okay teaching out of your home. Which, if you ask any English teacher in Thailand, is where the money is anyway. I made approx. 1,500 baht in two days, and I could have charged way more money and still got the kids to come. But I felt sorry for the kids that didn't have alot of money, so I kept it cheap. Call me a softy
Where is your housing area? You are being compassionate, good for you. I also want to make enough for to live there (beer, TTM and extras). We don't teach to be rich, ya?

Mr. Soi Magpie........Teaching is naturally 'enriching'. ........You can 'profit' from the experience. .........You can 'give back' to society. .........Teaching is a 'rewarding' occupation. .........etc etc etc. But the first question in YOUR mind when you are sitting in a job interview for a teaching position is, "How much for how long?" And the first question when you are interviewing a working girl for a position that you may have open for her is also "How much for how long?" That's the equation that you need to consider.

How easy is it to get these teaching jobs if you do have a bachlor's degree and TEFL certificate? Does it take a month, two months to start? What's been your experience?

Not hard at all to get a job in rural Thailand with the public schools. You will get a work permit. You won't get paid alot but you will experience the real Thailand and not the bull crap of BKK and Pattaya.

Unfortunately the answer depends on how quickly the 'institution' requires an English teacher. These places could be government run schools, private schools, hotels, hospitals, businesses, whatever. From my experience the Thai way is to take an incredibly long time to make a decision on when they want teaching to commence (apart from schools who like to have their teachers begin at the start of term). We tried to stitch up a contract with a hotel in Patong and after 4 months of negotiations they decided to use another language school. Talk about frustrating.

Better qualifications, better job, better wage. Sound familiar? Heard it in farangland? Top jobs, teching in a good international school. ISB, Patana, RIS, NIST. Expect 1000k plus per month and a package, health, flights, accomodation etc. Middle American School bangkok, Thai chinese. Multiply the above by.6 You need a degree, preferably in the subject area and a teaching certificate. You can go down a scale to being paid very little. Thoughts, not that I have them too often. Teaching is a profession, a career. Job satisfaction is high for the right candidiates. It is not easy to just turn up and collect a decent salary to pussy hunt.
