I saw a guy just yesterday who decided to circumvent the normal flow of traffic by going to the front of the queue by driving along the left hand turning lane to the very front.
Now here the guy sits blocking traffic that would like to be turning left
When the light turns green his 70s jalopy wouldn't accelerate fast enough and he was blown by with a parade of diesel pick-up trucks. He sat there with a disgusted look on his face, and all I could think was "SomNahmNah ! !", and was LMAO
in this case his creative solution only ended with an excuse for his unecessary blocking of traffic

I hook up with my #1 all time greatest fu>k on one trip go home and come back two months later looking for her. I go to bar and mamasan tells me she no longer works bar and that she married an English bloke and she doesn't know where she is. No problem on my part except for tears in my eyes as I realise she's gone forever. Ya she was that good.
Next day is Kings birthday and all the bars are closed ane I met her by chance at the Royal Garden, she tells me she works across the soi at a go go and that mamasan knows she works there.
I go back to the bar and ask mamasan why she lied to me. She starts screaming at me in broken English. I walk away. When I asked the question all she had to tell me that when a girl leaves she doesn't pass on information about where the girls works as she has girls in her bar that she wants me to barfine. I would understand and respect her point of view.
In her world it's easier to tell a lie.

But of course BigDusa. It makes perfect sense to me she telling you a lie.
What doesn't make sense is you going back to ask her WHY she lied to you. Why did you have to get a reason from her? Or did you just want to show her that you are no dummy and that you caught her lying. Maybe to teach her a lesson so that she doesn't do it anymore? See, that is the part I do not understand.

BigDUSA knew the answer to his queations, but it is typical western mentality on traying to mold Thai's to our "best" way. Fact of the matter, she does not care if you respect her.
Better revenge would be go back to the bar with your girl order one drink then give the "Thai smile" to Mamasan as you leave.

If you lie to a Thai national, this person usually won't tell you that you are a liar, because it would be considered as "losing his/her temper".
On the other way, if you discover that a Thai lied to you, don't tell him/her as he/she would think that you want he/she to lose his/her face.

If loosing face is such a big deal then why don't the Thai stop tellin' lies then there would be nothin' to loose face about if/when they are found out to have lied. That's a non-Thai way of lookin' at things I suppose.

absolutely, I've done that a few times myself
but in my neighborhood it's pretty easy to track them down, just the couple that moved to Pattaya (Tim's Bar) had me a little perplexed until Calzoid, LosVisitor, & I just happened to walk in there by chance on our mini-RT back in July
even giving the Thai Somnahmna smile in traffic works, because they will look at your face if they can. Flipping them off makes them go absolutely f***ing ape-shit, so a well placed "you're a dumb-ass" smile gets them pretty good too.
It's the same look you would give to a child who climbed out of their crib to get to the cookies, but once outside the crib can't get back to their milk and now their throat is dry, 555

I personally don't think that lying is a good way to deal with problems, but some persons, Thai nationals or from any other country in the world, sometimes think that it is a "moindre mal" (the lesser evil thing) in order to hide a failure or bad news.
Well, I believe it is even truer with Thais?

PS: For the Thais, to keep good relations with other people is a priority in their life.
Thais also tend to avoid having problems and generally cannot enjoy things (jobs, tasks, relationships...) that does not bring a minimum of fun and pleasure.
They do not want to be associated to all which is not "sanook" (funny, pleasant), and sometimes think that a lie is preferable than a "prise de tête"! (french locution that means "headache" but also "quarrel")
