This appears to say either one of us could be right or wrong.

So a person born in or out of the US may or may not be able to become President who can then move to Thailand and may or may not be able to become a Thai citizen?

...but to be President, he has to be "natural born" wherever he is born.

Clear?

expatchuck, I am always impressed with your succinct and incisive remarks, but this last entry is such a shock to me, to learn that George Bush Jr is a 'natural born' specimen of the human race.

Are you certain of your facts on this one ?

Joe:

As his predecessor once said...It depends on what the definition of "natural born is" is.

Ding. Alan, you keep getting it wrong again. To use the president thing to define nationality status is wrong. In some places there are requirements to be head of state that go beyond one being a national of that country (age, education, prior experience, etc. yes, in some countries they raise the bar.. it is not enough to be a national).

Now, regarding Mexico, said article 30 of the constitution says at the beginning:

Artículo 30.- La nacionalidad mexicana se adquiere por nacimiento o por naturalización.

A. Son mexicanos por nacimiento:

I.- Los que nazcan en el territorio de la República, sea cual fuere la nacionalidad de sus padres.

That is:

"Mexican nationality is adquired by birth or naturalization.

Mexicans by birth are:

Those born in the territory of the republic regardless of the nationality of the parents."

It couldn't be more clear.

Swallow it Alan, the USA is not unique.

BTW, in many cases one doesn't need to acually be born in a territory to be considered a national by birth.

For example, in that same Mexican case, one person can be considered a Mexcian by birth even if born outside Mexico, as long as one of the parents is Mexican. Thus the requirement that Alan mentions is not to actually be born in the country, but to be "Mexican by birth"as defined by the law. See, Alan was also wrong on that.

Actually EPC,

If you followed the references at the bottom of the page you linked to you would find that, as usual, Mr. Alan is wrong:

Native Born Citizen

No, I was not wrong. I pointed out eariler that in the US (like Mexico) that one may be considered to be a natural born citizen even if born outside the country, if (for example) both of your parents are citizens (and in the case of the US they must have resided in the US a certain number of years before the birth of the child).

I was not talking about is those born outside Mexico, but the whether one is automatically a full citizen if one is born in Mexico, even if the parents are not citizens (and may actually be illegally in the country).

In the case of Mexico, full citizenship is not bestowed upon someone automatically just becasue they are born inside the country (unlike the US). At least one parent must also be a citizen of Mexico. However, if one is born in Mexico, at least partial citizenship is bestowed regardless of whether the parents are citizens.

That is a fact, and no amount of twsited logic or changing the subject to people born outside of Mexico (who may actually be considered to be citizens) will change that fact.
