Ballsburstin, you can't just get a tourist visa at Poipet (no way to get tourist visa when you are inside LOS). You have to stay there 3-4 0 (working) days to get a tourist visa. But you are not in LOS now, then you can apply a tourist visa in your own country. Than you can apply a extension for 30days when you are in LOS after 60days. That means you can stay in LOS for three month.

Balls Your best bet is to arrive on a tourist visa, then pay for an extension within LOS. After that, depending on how much longer you want to stay, you have two options: 1) Get another visa. For this, you'll need to go somewhere (like Penang or Phnom Penh) which has a Thai consulate. The visa will take 3/4 working days to process (you'll find plenty of advice on the net for particular consulates). 2) Get by on 30-day entry stamps. For these, all you need to do is go to the nearest border crossing (usually Aranya/Poi Pet), leave LOS for 10 minutes then come straight back in. An open airline ticket should be fine - in the very unlikely event anyone asks to see it, just say you're not sure exactly when you'll be leaving. At a border crossing like Poi Pet, it's very obvious to the immigration officials that you're there just to extend your time in LOS, and you may have a passport full of stamps to show that this is a regular occurrence. They really don't give a damn.

re: Penang, Malaysia. For almost any class of visa, if your paperwork is in order you may turn in your application in the morning and get your passport back with a Thai visa in it the following afternoon. They are open short hours, but very helpful. Be aware also that like any Thai consulate they close on both Thai holdays and those of the country in which they are located. Malaysia has an inordinate number of public holidays, but most of them only affect one or two states; nine "King's" birthdays, for starters...

-------------------------------------------------------------------- For almost any class of visa, if your paperwork is in order you may turn in your application in the morning and get your passport back with a Thai visa in it the following afternoon. -------------------------------------------------------------------- But do realize that when you're travelling by train, the train arrives in the afternoon, and departs also in the afternoon (before the Consulate opens). For example Leave Bkk on Sunday Arrive on Monday afternoon Submit application on Tuesday morning (be aware that only applications are taken in the morning) Receive visa on Wednesday afternoon (be aware that only visa receipts are in the afternoon) Leave Penang on Thursday. Arrive in bkk on Friday. Altogether 6 days.... Also, last time I was in Penang I received a double entry tourist visa (2 x 90 days, including extensions in BKK and trip abroad). Financially, for me (and other permanent LOS guests) it's not attractive any more to go abroad. Trip to Penang (train, hotel, visa) around THB 5,000 extensions 2 x 1,900 baht THB 3,800 trip to get the second entry THB 1,500 Total THB 10,300 6 visa trips to Poi Pet x 1,500 baht THB 9,000 -------------------------------------------------------------------- I guess the reason most people overstay (those that live here, anyway) is that come the day for the visa run they find they have other & more important things to do. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Right. The only reason why I overstay is that I am lazy or slept late the night before...

OMG, you're right - there's a whopping $ 35 difference between the two trips, and that kind of money just certainly will break the bank. > Right. The only reason why I overstay is that I am lazy > or slept late the night before... Well, at least you're not complaining about Thais being lazy and oversleeping ;-P Harry

Harry, you didn't get the point.... After the extension price hike in August it isn't cheaper to get a visa abroad. So it isn't attractive anymore (savings wise) to go all the way to Penang or other remote Embassy. UPDATE: Just returned from Poi Pet. Saw at least 10 foreigners waiting to pay their overstay. Not a worry on their face.... BTW Did I complain in any post?

Sorry for misunderstanding - of course, this makes sense. That might also have been a reason behind the price hikes, to make people just stay and take care of their extension, no? This appears to be enforced now, at least sometimes, as there were recently raids in Pattaya of Hotels and guesthouses to root out the farangs with improper visa papers. See, article in PattayaMail.com -------------------------------------- Immigration officers raid tourist hotels defying immigration rules No valid documents and visa expirations biggest problem Boonlua Chatree Over 60 immigration police raided hotels, guesthouses and other tourist venues on Monday, arresting a number of foreigners in a major crackdown on violators of immigration regulations. Police last Monday raided over a dozen hotels, guesthouses and condominiums, searching for valid immigration documentation. Police Major General Pongsapat Pongcharoen, deputy commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, said a total of 13 hotels, guesthouses and condominiums were raided. Many foreigners were arrested for failing to produce valid visa documents. Police also fined a number of hotels failing to report the foreign tourists staying on the premises. The hotels were fined 1,000 baht per person after being found violating clause 38 of the 1979 Immigration Act. “We’re trying to improve the information we receive after tourists enter one of 54 entry points into Thailand. After (tourists) enter the country, we don’t know where they go. If these hotels and guesthouses fail to follow the guidelines after today, we’ll shut them down altogether,” said Pongsapat. Similar raids took place in Bangkok’s Khao San Road area on Sunday with a number of foreigners also being detained for overstaying their visas.

Just returned from Poi Pet. Saw at least 10 foreigners waiting to pay their overstay Actually, this can be quite a good reason not to overstay yourself. Last time I went there, I was right behind what seemed like a whole busload of Norwegians, all of whom had a one-day overstay. I calculated that it took 4-5 minutes to process each one (all routine form-filling, no third-degree interrogation). If your timing is unlucky, this can mean a very long, tedious wait at the border post. The lady cop on overstay duty was quite easy on the eye, but even so...

Yes, Arcadius. One reason I went one day earlier instead of one day later this month. (I had to work on the due date). Normally when the train arrives at 11.30 it's not a real problem to get the 13.35 back. However, sometimes the train is delayed by half an hour and then you arrive at the Cambodia Visa Application counter at lunch time. Didn't make the train back. Had to take a bus and then taxi from Morchit. Very annoying (train is close to my apartment) and takes much longer than the train.
