Quote: from Fritz on 8:32 pm on April 30, 2003 In most European countries, 4 weeks are the average. In some other EU countries, 5-6 weeks (= 30 days max) are more common... But 30-60 days?? No way, I never heard about this.. not even with unpaid leave. (Would be possible for freelancers, self-employed persons and short-time workers, of course.) BTW there are also some US firms that provide 3-4 weeks of vacation, depending on the seniority of their employees. Regarding the main topic of the thread: I'm not yet a LOS expert, but my first impression is that I would not like to live here permanently... I am looking forward to spend most of my 30 vacation days around BKK in the future - LOS is a great place for holidays and a great temporary hideway from the overly civilized western countries, but living there forever?? No, I don't think so... too many disadvantages - some hidden, some rather obvious... Fritz
Just so you know 30 days is about 4 weeks (28 days to be exact). You yourself said Europeans get 4 weeks, that is about 30 (your low and my low). You then said 5-6 weeeks for some (this is 35-42 days). That sounds like it falls in my 30-60 day estimate huh? Wow!

BB I think they are working that 4 weeks = 20 days....as in Monday to Friday. It certainly is true that holidays are much less in the US....I was horrified...turned me off working there......Much more to life that making money for someone else. I get 15 days here in Thailand.....and then another 13 National Holidays....they say Thailand has more National Holidays than any other country.... I've taken one day off in the 11 months.....what was it I said above....

Fritz, Good post that. You have simply stirred some of the misgivings that were churning inside me ever since I fell in love with LOS. I do suspect that attitudes might change once they see you have turned into a local resident. Actually your post contains fodder also for some great debates on this Forum. Specifically, your reference to :- 1.Lack of "real culture " - arts, theatre, etc 2.Political instability, military culture, arbitrary police, etc 3.Serious relationships being as difficult here as anywhere else. Probably some of the bros on this Forum who are more familiar with Thai life may take you up on your comment about lack of arts, museum, theatre. But, yes, these aspects of culture say a lot about local life, politics and people's freedom. Damn it, but I still love LOS. And like bro Lofty, I too feel "piss bored" once I am back home, wishing away my life till my next trip. Well said, bro Lofty, you touched a similar chord here ! Fritz may be right, there is probably "something wrong in my life that I should change." Isn't it easy to see what that is ? My residence, of course. I admit, LOS isn't the perfect place to live in but, among all the imperfect places that make up an imperfect world, it seems to me the best. Moving my ass "over there" -- as Arcadius recommends - is a stiff challenge. But, short of that, I would love making at least half-a-dozen trips every year. The best thing to do under the circs.

Political Instability: ÝMy first stories of Thailand came from a close friend that was there in the mid seventies. ÝThailand was under martial law then. ÝIf the BG tried to rip you off, you just threw her out after curfew to be picked up by the military. Ý Desclaimer: Just repeating the story.

Fritz, Thanks for such an insightful post. I'd still like to hear some more about this from someone who lives in Thailand, but those are very good points. -PS

- As a farang you will always be an outsider. Probably true. But does it really matter? - Arbitrary justice and police, no real democracy. Not an issue if you are of the middle or upper middle class. - Politically instable. (Numerous military dictatorships in the past decades) Ditto. Every coup so far, the solution is to stay at home, shut the gates, and watch tv. Then things are back to normal a day or three later. - Lack of decent jobs (Not even mentioning salaries..) Yes. Not a place to come if you're poor. - Lack of real culture (Art, Museum, Theater, Opera..) Fly to Sydney on Thursday, see the opera, back in Bangkok on Saturday. - Climate - heat, humidity and rainy season Lots of air conditioner units recommended. Even in the bathroom and garage. - Traffic in BKK, could not drive my roadster & bike here Recommend having a car and driver. If not, drive during non-rush hours only. - Serious relationships as difficult as anywhere else Disagree, just pick the right partner. Pick someone who is your equal, not an illiterate bargirl from Issan. - Thai people too materialistic, not open minded That's their problem, not yours.
