Why do people recommend getting a teaching job once in thailand as opposed to getting one in your home country? I read that the high teaching salaries are paid by companies advertising outside thailand. Surely if you can secure one of the high-salary and good packages from outside thailand then this is better than arriving and taking a job paying 20 - 30,000baht? Someone please shed some light on a subject im still learning about!

I agree Leeroy My friend currently works at a S. Korean university teaching conversational English. He gets 9 weeks off in the winter and 9 weeks off in the summer, plus all national holidays. His base salary is 2 grand/month. He also receives a paid for high rise apartment (which apparently is the best accomodations for English teachers in S. Korea). He works 21 hours a week and does privates on the side for $30 an hour. He has medical insurance and a pension which is matched by the University. He told me his privates pay for his living expenses and almost everything else is banked. He travels extensively throughout Asia and makes it out to the LOS twice a year. He started with a program called Epic (government run) and then moved on to a University. I'm joining up in August myself.

Dagul, Wow thats an awesome set up! is it solely based in Korea, or is Thailand an option too? I dont know what you do, but im teaching English in Japan currently, but am thinking of going to Thailand to teach. I get to save after bills and expenses and spending money around £900 per month. I know that I wont get this in Thailand but im ready for a change I think. When deciding where to live and teach in Thailand, can I just go to where I want to live and pick up a job there easy? Or should I check out 'hotspots' where there a re a larger concentration of teaching opportunities available?

Thanks Baskoy, i have just returned from a month in LOS and have a serious case of the blues. I went on my own for my first holiday in Thailand and was worried that I wouldnt meet anyone/have a good time but I had a f!"£$king marvellous time! I cant wait to go back. I teach English in Japan, so I think i'll go to thailand next march and give it a try there for a while. I recently visited that website you mentioned and its great. thanks a lot. if you know of any other gems like that then fell free to tell me or PM me.

No problem... But just remember being here on holiday with money in your pocket is great, but living here and having to get by on a Teachers salary is a different thing. You say you are saving £900 a month.. You wouldn't even earn that teaching here. I'd give it a bit of thought and come March maybe you can have another holiday!.. It's just the post Bangkok blues making you feel you want to come back!

yeah I know things would be very different living in thailand as opposed to being on holiday. I read some surveys of teachers spending habits and they were spending in a month what I was spending in a night! The thing is, I would be happy to work all week doing relatively little after work, just hanging out with friends, and then go out at the weekend and have a few beers with friends and go somewhere like cinema or whatever. I wouldnt be down the go-gos every night. How much money do you need to earn to have this lifestyle? I know accomodation etc plays a part, but wouldnt want luxury - just clean and not a shoebox. Is the 30,000baht range enough for this or is that the bare minimum to 'exist' in thailand? ie no beers, social life etc? Would 40-50,000baht allow me this lyfestyle but with some extras along the way? I wouldnt want to be counting the pennies and being the one in the group thats always checking if he has enough to do what the group wants to do, but I dont need to be lording it up all the time either.

leeroy, I would say 40,000 bare minimum...if you want to have a nice existance 60,000. I made in the neighborhood of 100,000 a month selling wine and could never save enough for 2 tickets back to the states much less the spending $$$ once I got there. then again my spending habits seem like they were a bit more than what you estimate. atl

atl, what were your spending habits and were you in bangkok? were you out every night/drinking posh stuff/going to posh places or was your entertainment modest - drinking beer in cheaper places?
