I personally don't think that lying is a good way to deal with problems, but some persons, Thai nationals or from any other country in the world, sometimes think that it is a "moindre mal" (the lesser evil thing) in order to hide a failure or bad news.
I think the issue is not that Thai culture appears to be stronger with lying, but rather that Thai people are not as creative when it comes to lies. Lying's okay for certain situations to smooth over a situation, but bad lies make it worse.
The problem, I think, from what I'm reading here, is that these fine folks simply don't know how to lie well, or how to be sufficiently creative doing it - lack of creativity seems to be a stereotype in asian cultures, so it appears to be a bad combination in this case.

Most Thais are buddihsts and are prohibited from lying by the Buddihist doctrine. They also have tremendous problems of saying "no" because they do not want to disappoint people and seldom raise objection because it's considered "impolite". So in a situation when they have to do one or the other, they sometimes would just stay silent instead of saying "no" and sometimes they will continue doing things but totally ignoring the question because they don't want to or don't know how to address it.

I think 'Thai Buddhism' is a whole different ball of wax, than 'just plain Buddhism', considering plenty of what Thai Buddhists do, seems to be in direct contrast to what 'Buddha' suggested.
Then again, the same could be said about Christianity.

Quite right. Thai has their own "brand" of Buddihsm. But the prohibition of lying is universal. My previous post did miss a footnote : It applies to "good" Thai boys and girls. The "bad" girls in the p4p scene generally are a little lacking in their Buddhist disciplin, lucky for us!! 555555

As you so aptly pointed out, 'our' girls seem to take amore lax approach to abiding by that - find it interesting how that works in their philosophy?
Also, as some of the discussion here seems to illustrate, even 'good' folks are prone to lying. I guess it's all a matter of definition - of what constitutes a lie.

Wow! This is turning into a very educational discussion about Thais and their religion.
All coming from one guy that is still obsessed trying to find out where Japan is and from another one that thinks that Captain Kirk should be the model for all political leaders. You guys really know your stuff. I am impressed.

Haha, there you are Smegma !! You and TWD have already told us that Japanese are not asians to the collective sigh of relief of all my asian friends. So thank you very much. Since they ( the Japanese ) are not asian I concluded that they must be Pacific Islanders. Is that ok ? are we cool now ?
