Quote: from bound4bangkok on 2:04 pm on Mar. 17, 2005 Actually I am 41 and will have enough money to live on If and when I ever move to Thailand. My question was for information only if it was even possable. But getting a job for 15-20 hrs a week at a fastfood joint would give me something to do. I don,t think I can teach its just not in me so what other job can a low skill non educated middle age man do??
So, essentially, you are just looking for a way to kill time in-between f***s, until the money runs out, or you die - seeing as how there is nothing else to do in Thailand... Don't you have hobbies? Interest in your surroundings ? Wanting to learn something new, or maybe, learn a new (gasp!) skill -- to maybe change yourself from being non-educated, low-skill to something better. Dr. von Quack!

Why don't you become a street beggar on Sukhumvit Road? The pay's better and you'll get to meet people. It might help you improve your feelings of self-worth also. I'll lend you a puppy for 40% of your takings.

Or, he could become a time-share telemarketer, one of the friendly guys that give you a wake-up call if you're foolish enough to complete a 'tourist survey'. Good Morning, Bangkok! Even better, become a low-life pimp, and convince members (i.e. unsuspecting newbies) into paying 4 times the market price for pussy. Tell them you're donating their extra money to buy compters for the local schools. Of course, we already have one member doing this (your age, with similar education), but he's not working the Bangkok market.

Quote: from waxhead on 12:30 am on Mar. 15, 2005 I get a bit amused reading this thread; and think in summarisiong the best of everyone's contributions, it goes something like this.... 1. Go for it, but give yourself the best possible chance to enjoy life here; i.e. if you MUST teach english (which can be well or poorly paid depending on qualifications and effort) then do it properly and earn some reasonable cash; living here on 30,000 baht a month is a waste of time; only a couple of my Thai staff earn less than this and they have parents to provide a house and so on; foreign workers don't. This means getting the right qualifications (which may take some planning and time) to teach at a decent school - the same as if you wanted to be a teacher in a western country. Alternatively, actually get a job in the profession you work in; to do this takes contacts, usually some knowledge of Thai customs and language helps a lot and you need to be in a profession that is not "Thai only" here - I know of aircon guys, engineers, business people - all sorts that are doing fine here earning far more than teachers - but it won't happen overnight, and it certainly cannot match a NEP every night lifestyle. Well, probably not for most anyway 2. Be prepared to pay to live a decent life and have the money to back yourself up for this. Initially, you'll be taxiing, drinking, etc and generally burning through cash; make sure you have enough to last you through the initial splurge and also that you have some sort of income stream planned; be it investment property in New Zealand funded by Asian student tenants or whatever - and also have a plan that when you have burned through a certain amount, you'll call it quits and go home. Exactly like a casino - if you are going to ante up, then learn the game, and set yourself a limit of how much you want to burn through b4 quitting. 3. Listen to the people who are successfully living here; not some loser propping up a bar in NEP who hates everything here except the women (who he also hates most of the time). 4. Don't burn any bridges; least of all back home. Most of the guys who do end up in the position 3 sitting at the bar 5. Actually make an effort to learn Thai, understand how Thai people think and respect the ways of doing things here, even if you don't like them. The people you work with will see you are someone who "understands how things work around here" and that is half the key to getting to change anything. Joining the vast crowd of "TIT parrots" who complain about each and everything won't endear you to many Thai people, and chances are that is who you will work with. Besides which, why else are you coming here anyway? To hang out at NEP everynight? frigging heck, that will get boring after what, the first week surely. Finally, if you are actually going to do business around here, your nightlife activities may suffer; at a senior management level hanging around NEP may be detrimental to your career (although hanging around Poseidon/Forte etc is another story). With that in mind, this may influence whether you wish to work here, or holiday here - the two are rather different options - each with positives and negatives. If you are serious about buildling a life here, then that involves a lot more work - to fit in, to make a difference to the people around you, and so on.
Great post waxhead. Years ago chucking it all was joining the French Foreign Legion.

BkkBound I think you are bound for Somdet Chao Praya Hospital. That is a psychiatric hospital on the other side of the river where I had a real job counseling pathetic loser farangs who came to LOS to teach English and ended up as drug addicts. Another alternative along the lines of what Khun Scobie suggested. You can cut a big gash in your legs and let in get infected and than crawl along Suk Soi 11. You will get a to look up dresses of teenage Jap/Korean girl tourist for free. Fancy some milky white legs and black hairy bushes? Maybe the little midget at the Check Inn Club will give you a job. He's been there for ages, he probably has some good connections for you. Three More Suggestions Tuk Tuk driver. You would be a novelty and would get alot of business. No way, the Tuk Tuk mafia will off you. Street Vendor-you certainly would be unique. You could serve ice cream at Swensens and meet alot of cute TGs in nice uniforms. Good night

I particularly love this quote from bound4bangkok: "I don,t think I can teach its just not in me so what other job can a low skill non educated middle age man do??" Has he - unwittingly - come up with the definitive description of an English teacher in Bangkok?
