Quote: from Holy Diver on 5:53 am on Sep. 6, 2003 As you said, the Thai government appears to completely miss this point.
Again, standard disclaimer: I'm a bloody newbie, and do not profess to understand much of Thai culture - that being said, I think both of you make the mistake of judging what the Thai gov't does with a Western viewpoint - instead of the Thai perspective. I believe the concept of 'face' is one that is terminally confusing and troubling to westerners, yet it governs Thai culture. From a point of view of *their* version of saving face, their actions not only make sense, but furthermore from others in this forum point out, are backed up by economic realities. This is already quite evident from both the reaction to the hardliners within their own gov't - statements that the massage parlors and go go bars should continue to operate, just not outside of their bounds - furthermore, clarifications were made repeatedly that the gov't has a mandate to crack down on illicit drug use, more than on nude dancing. In addition, nowhere in all of the articles on these crackdowns was anything mentioned about eliminating, for example, beer bar girl, or frfeelancer situations. It seems to me that a couple of factors are interplaying and interacting here: - the persecution of Chuwit, who has become too visible, and it seems obvious that someone has it out for him. - the upcoming APEC summit. - several functionaries desperate to make themselves appear useful, by going on a crusade (which is already being limited and reigned in by other deputy ministers) The way I see it so far, I think the net effect of all of this on the scene will be close to nil, or rather, the net effect on most of the users' on this board's ability to fly to Thailand and pick up some honeys is nil. Will it matter if the girls in the Gog Gos wear bikinis, as long as they wear none in your hotel room? Will it matter if MPs no longer offer sexual favors to Thai customers, but still to farang customers (as those won't be police); Maybe I'm missing something essential, but I do believe that these factors will pass, some stuff will be adjusted, and things wil gradually return to 'normal'. Best, Harry

Quote: from Mr Alan on 6:14 am on Sep. 6, 2003 But non-US citizens (legal aliens) residing in the USA also have a lot of freedoms, although I assume they have to report their whereabouts to immigration officials every so often.
No, we don't. Once you have the green card, you are under no obligation to report your whereabouts.
Quote: from Mr Alan on 6:14 am on Sep. 6, 2003 Even illegal aliens in some states have the right to some government services.
Hopefully, that will change! Harry

Mr. Smegma....I think the several millions Mr JHolmesJr is talking about are in the Minor Leagues. You know, rookies waiting to be drafted(at the legal age of course) and semi-pros looking to catch on regular, and of course those in careers that do not pay as well, so applications are in the mail. Add to that the retired, who are never really closed for business...etc.etc. Are we up to a million yet.

Mr Hzink.........You are right about 'face'. The problem for Asian countries comes when they must combine decisions based on face, and indeed tradition, with the real world of international commerce. The 'clean-up' almost similar in nature took place in Shanghai when they held APEC. with some additions. For instance Time magazine suddenly became available....not before and not after APEC. BBC on line became available.....not before and not after APEC. Not important for Chinese people, but important for Western people to 'know' about Chinese people. Open society etc etc. Saving face is actually a positive quality, however one must realize there was a 'face' before and there will be another 'face' after. The fact is that this time the saving face is not really for other Thais since it only occurs for foreigners relating to an international event. The complication of why the face needs to be saved is made more difficult by what the Asian country itself feels should be the face that foreigners 'want to see' as representative of the country. In Shanghai millions were spent on tearing up perfectly good sidewalks and replacing them with perfectly new sidewalks. The fact that most APEC big wigs would never walk down a sidewalk, was missed. Nobody went home saying "Shanghai? Yeh, great sidewalks!" It is the governments themselves that decide what face should be changed in order to represent the best face of the country involved, TO OUTSIDE OBSERVERS. Chuwit is actually the right guy at the right time. What foreign leader doesn't like a display of law and order. So the Thai government has a made to order culprit. The pieces to any Asian puzzle always fit perfectly.

Harry The way I see it so far, I think the net effect of all of this on the scene will be close to nil, or rather, the net effect on most of the users' on this board's ability to fly to Thailand and pick up some honeys is nil While this is certainly true, it is also party-pooping. You have to realise that many people enjoy the Thailand they love being smashed before their very eyes just as much as they enjoy being poisoned, bombed or threated by the killer plague du jour. C'mon, they're stuck in farangland. Paranoid hysterics help to pass the time. In any civilised country, of course, mai pen rai works better.
