Quote: from S M E G M A on 10:23 am on Sep. 27, 2007 Ding. Alan, you keep getting it wrong again. To use the president thing to define nationality status is wrong. In some places there are requirements to be head of state that go beyond one being a national of that country (age, education, prior experience, etc. yes, in some countries they raise the bar.. it is not enough to be a national). Now, regarding Mexico, said article 30 of the constitution says at the beginning: <snip>
I have already presented evidence that strongly suggests your claim is wrong; however, I am just reporting what I read and I don't claim to be an expert on Mexican immigration law. Perhaps you should not try to personalize these matters, like a little boy would by calling someone names. But I will tell you that quoting the Mexican constitution may not shed any light on the facts, anymore than they do in the US, since these matters are often handled by subsequent legislation or court rulings in addition to the constitution itself (which is usually more general in its language). The bottom line is that if one is born in the US, regardless of whether ones parents are citizens (they may even be in the US illegally), the child is automatically a citizen will full citizenship rights, including the right to become president. This is not the case in Mexico, since one parent must also be citizen for the child to have full and unrestricted citizenship rights.

Quote: from China Sailor on 11:07 am on Sep. 27, 2007 Actually EPC, If you followed the references at the bottom of the page you linked to you would find that, as usual, Mr. Alan is wrong: Native Born Citizen Next...
There is nothing in that link that even remotely suggests I am wrong. That article is so vague as to be meaningless (it is more like a dictionary definition of native born) and makes no reference to the laws of Mexico, and scant reference to those of the US (which references are woefully incomplete).

Well it does have it's benefits. You could own land in Thailand legally without going through a corporation. You do not need to worry about the 30 days limit in your visa on arrival. Plus many other benefits that I do not want to enumerate. Of course it is only useful for people who have the intelligence to understand it's usefulness.

When my Thai wife first arrived in the U.S, she received a Green Card before she even left the airport! And this was before we were even legally married in the U.S! And the INS person even smiled and wished her good luck! That's quite a contrast from the usual welcome we Farangs receive in LOS, even if we are married to a Thai citizen! Once we were married, we had to check in with the INS twice to see if we were still married. After 5 years, my wife received U.S citizenship. The Thai government knows nothing of her status, and that's fine by us. We moved to Thailand three years ago, and as far as the Thai government is concerned, my wife is Thai. That was good because it allowed us to but land and build a house. After our son was born 15 months ago, I was miffed that the municipal government automatically listed his nationality on his birth certificate as Thai. I corrected this immediately by going to the U.S. Consulate in Chiang, and filling out a Citizen Born Abroad form. He now holds a U.S. passport, which will come in handy if things get dicey when HRH passes away (May he live for a hundred years!) and we need to exit LOS in a hurry! So the Thai government continues to think of my son as Thai, while the U.S thinks of him as an American. That's all for the best, in that he can live in either country. depending on what he someday wants to do.

Quote: from atl on 9:57 am on Sep. 26, 2007 so 5 years in all..I think I am correct on this and dont think we will try and make mrs. atl a citizen (unless she wants to)... its much better as a perminent resident... my 2 cents, atl
Sorry to take so long to respond to this but: Not obtaining your U.S. citizenship for Mrs. ATL I think is a mistake. Keep in mind that a Green Card only allows her to enter the U.S. and does not allow her to visit some of the places I can go as a U.S. Citizen. It does not afford her any protection from the U.S. government if she were to get in trouble while abroad. Also any vacation you go on whether to Canada, Europe...etc will be governed by her being able to obtain a Visa as a Thai Citizen. Some countries allow her to visit but most do not have the agreements with Thailand like they do the U.S.. Sorry, I do not need that headache when visiting the Carribbean and making sure all 5 countries will allow her off the ship. I would also think that the greencard could be revoked for any reason whereas it would be much more difficult to take away U.S. citizenship when granted. She will also be able to vote Republican! Up to you. JMHO. LS
