right on the nail!

i just love pr's realism, allthough a lot of guys might be not that willing to look at it that way.
our western upbringing of 'so called' equal rights and romatic affairs stops many guys to look at it this way.

@ Lofty:

... I also hated to leave the LOS, and life seemed a bit dull afterwards during the first days. But isn't this always the case after really good vacations?

If you feel totally strange and unhappy at home, then maybe there is something wrong in your life that you should change?

Some reasons I wouldn't want to live in LOS permanently:

- As a farang you will always be an outsider.
- Arbitrary justice and police, no real democracy.
- Politically instable. (Numerous military dictatorships in
Ý the past decades)
- Lack of decent jobs (Not even mentioning salaries..)
- Lack of real culture (Art, Museum, Theater, Opera..)
- Climate - heat, humidity and rainy season
- Traffic in BKK, could not drive my roadster & bike here
- Serious relationships as difficult as anywhere else
- Thai people too materialistic, not open minded

Still I would like to try and live in BKK for a longer period (maybe several months) to check out if these first hand impressions are really true... Maybe in a couple of years...

Until then, I consider it as a 1st class holiday & party destination and as a hideway to relax from the Feminazis, ugly and brash girls and all the other bullsh_t that bothers me at home.

Cheers,
Fritz

Some reasons I wouldn't want to live in LOS permanently:
SEE REPLYS IN CAP'S
- As a farang you will always be an outsider. TRY LIVING IN BIRMINGHAM UK
- Arbitrary justice and police, no real democracy. TRY LIVING IN THE US OR UK
- Politically instable. (Numerous military dictatorships in
the past decades) TRY LIVING IN THE US OR THE UK OR 98% OF THE WORLD TODAY
- Lack of decent jobs (Not even mentioning salaries..) TRY LIVING NORTH OF LONDON IN THE UK
- Lack of real culture (Art, Museum, Theater, Opera..) SO SHALLOW, AS I HAVE A BA IN MUSIK I CAN TELL YOU THAT THE THAI,MUSIC SEAN IS GREAT, A WONDERFULL BLEND OF WESTERN SOUNDS WITH THAI CLASSICAL MUSIC. DANCE FORM'S THAT ELIGHTEN YOUR MIND IF YOU LOOK. COSTUMES, MATIAL ARTS, TOO MUCH TO GO INTO ON ONE REPLY
- Climate - heat, humidity and rainy season HAVE RAINY SEASEN ALL YEAR IN UK. HOT IS BETTER THAN BLOODY COLD
- Traffic in BKK, could not drive my roadster & bike here. TRY M25 AROUND HEATHROW AREA EVERY DAY.
- Serious relationships as difficult as anywhere else. TRY THE UK
- Thai people too materialistic, not open minded TRY ANYWEHRE IN THE WEST, NOT ONLY THAT BUT IF THEY ALL ARE MATERIALISTIC AT LEAST YOU KNOW WHERE YOU STAND.

IMHO, very few are "lucky" to be able to live in LOS.
We 've had quite some threads similar to this one.
With so many people wanting to live there, what is the chance to get "lucky"?

What i'm trying to do now is building up my assets, so I have enough dough to take a 1/2 to 1 year vacation to LOS as well as some steady income-providers.

I'll see where it goes from there, if everything works out bad, I can still go back to the treadmill.

Until that day, i'll keep going there on vacation, but i'm going to DO it soon.

Just curious: Care to share that companies name? Was it consulting or working for some government owned company ?

Best of luck to your ventures!

A lot of my buddies do the offshore work.. Month 'on' 2 - 3 months 'off' depending on skill set and burn rates...

I know at the moment LST (Life Support Technicians) are in great demand for the divers backup (as are Joystick Jockies / RoV Pilots) and the LST course is a 2 week task at a cost of about 1500 USD (in Mumbai or a hair more in UK)...

So 2 week and $1500 investment... then your safty training / heli drop (done in pattaya cheap) and a first aid course... Do all this and get +- $200 per day (tax free) in the beggining.. Once you have >200 days experience add 50%...

So you do 30 days 'on' and make about 6k USD after taxes... Take 2 months living as an expat and you would probably not be spending the 240,000 baht you bring home... work 4 months a year and enjoy 8 !!!!

Thats just the simple stuff... Divers / engineers / etc make sbstantially more...

The RoV is more complicated in training but not much.. I know a couple of ex divers that went to RoV due to the strain that saturation diving does to the body (kills you fast basically) IIRC there was a 6 week course and then a 'trainee' period as those RoV's are valuable little pieces of engineering... The upside is much better pay levels than LST work (I mentioned that as its so simple to break into and apparently highly in demand right now... 2 buddies are currently on a course and flew out of Thailand to Plymouth UK on Sat last weekend) and also RoV work is a bit odd in that they need you full time on the rig but you sometimes only work for 'problem' issues (unless its inspection work)... One guy I know just did a 30 days stint and only worked twice in the 30 days... Lots of suntan time on a rig in the S China sea !?!?!...

Lots of companies work out of Singapore and just keep a book of available expats in the region... Work in SEA is less well paid than say North Sea of Gulf coast but costs of living and qulaity of life etc are so much better...

Lots of Work in Vietnam, S China Sea, Korea, etc...

I am thinking about 50% of my expat long stay buddies (who work rather than drink themselves to death / run a bar) here on Phuket are involved in the offshore game in one way or another...

There are many ways to live here.

It is easiest if you have loads of money, and you don't have to bother working.

If you were broke like me, then your only option is find a job, luckily for me, there was an opening for a webmaster, almost became an English teacher, in which case, this site wouldn't exist.

Determination is the key to getting a job here, that with some money to survive on and a bit of luck with contacts. If you really want it badly enough, and are willing to do (almost) anything, you will get it. I did.

I plan to make the move to Thailand in Jan 2005 when my current contract expires. Luckily, I will have enough available cash (forget other assets which are all tied up) for me to live very comfortably for many years. However, I only want to live here for 6 months max. without a job. Teaching is an option if I stay for a year & they can get the work permit. I am an engineer by profession & I will be looking closely at subway/skytrain developments when I am there. If I could land a job on one of the big infrastructure projects then I would be laughing. Once you get your toe in the door it is normally easy to keep the thing open indefinitely.
I just want to learn more of the language and to gauge whether I really want to make Thailand my base, as it seems that I am destined to spend a lot of my working life in Asia.
I intend to use my time studying & looking for alternative career opportunities. It is not my intention to go whoring & boozing every night...Monday will be my designated off day!!

Hey LivinLos - would like more information about the LST, Joystick Jockies & RoV Pilots...pardon my ignorance but i'm just a dumb american.

what sort or skill set do you need and does any of these occupations require a college degree? If you could clarify on what these positions entail, I'd greatly appreciate it. Wow, 2 weeks training and $1500 is all that keeps me from becoming an "expat"...where do I sign up?

if you like you can just email me directly.

thanks in advance.
