Say you earned 50,000.You would pay 10,000 a month for rent and utilities and that would be living outside of the expat orientated social areas (but you could get somewhere near a BTS for that) This would be a studio flat or Bedsit as we know it in the UK. That would then leave you 1300 a day to spend, out of that you have to pay for food and travel, a conservative figure of around 200/300 a day. As you are new you wouldn't know buses so you have to use BTS and taxis. This leaves around 1000 a day to take care of entertainment new clothes and general living expenses. If you go out a couple of nights a week you could get by on 50,000. But I personally wouldn't be happy with that life. As for savings, forget it.

Thanks Baskoy. Thats precisely the kind of info I was after. After reading your post I can imagine the kind of lifestyle i'd have a lot more easily. Are many teachers on 50k+? (and where are those positions!) I'd love to see a survey of teachers on a range of salaries from 20k - 60k+, and whether they were happy with their lifestyle or not. I saw something a bit like it on ajarn.com but it was depressing reading about those on anything less than 40k. Why do they do it for such little money? What do they get out of life if its a day-to-day struggle? If you take girls and entertainment out of the equation, is life in Thailand much fun?

Such little money, I think a Thai teacher receive's around 10-15k a month. A farang come's to LOS with no qualifacation's except that he can speak English and obtain's work as a teacher and want's big money. For those with qualifacation's or a uni degree that is OK, they are needed and deserve the big money. But the ex -brick'ies labourer, kitchen hand or truck driver seeking a high salary for teaching English is a bit of a joke. Some with limited skill's in teaching and communication (they bullshited their way into the system somehow) should be thankfull they even get a job. They did not go to uni like the Thai's or farang's with degree's and winge they do not get 50k month. That is the Thai system, it is a bit of a joke, that is all they have and they need farang teacher's. I have met a few teacher's and on the whole they are good people and should be paid the money, some.. I scratch the head and wonder how could they be a teacher of English of all thing's, beat's me.

Leeroy, I taught for a semester at assumption before getting a coprorate job...this was early 2002. Barra is correct Thai teachers make 10 - 22 thousand baht a month and many frown on farang teachers, which is understandable in my mind. I made 40,000 a month and had some savings which I digged into pretty quickly. as said before, 60,000baht a month would let you live a decent lifestyle with no savings. You asked my spending habits, and they were not outrageous but I liked to do my food shopping at Villa Market and hitting QBar/Bed/Forte etc from time to time. you dont see many teachers at these places. anything less than 60,000baht a month you are really watching your spending and that was cool with me for awhile but not something I would wanted to do for more than a year or so. the big thing to me was traveling outside of Thailand...I was 30 when I moved there and was a bit old to ask the folks for "loans" to go home for christmas or take a holiday to europe etc. Best of luck and feel free to PM me with specific questions. cheers, atl **edit in** I forgot to add that I like wine (alot) and before I worked for chateau de loie in Phuket that was a big expense for me....500baht a day at least...but then I just got a job selling it and eliminated that expense

They get a chance to live with their Thai girlfriend whom they met in a bar (usually) on their holiday. They get a chance to get a chance to meet a girl opposite their ex-wife. They get another chance at love in a land so strange that's like starting over, a second chance at life... This means frequent sex, many of the domestic chores taken care, the feeling of being loved by a woman lovely in their eyes... Due to my work I've met many. These English teachers in Thailand are men from from various walks of life. Relatively few of them have an academic (teaching) background, and those who do generally get the better paying jobs 50k+.... The others are between 25 - 40k, and know little about education or even the structure of the English language. And Barrafish is right in a way that leads to another reflection: the English language education system in Thailand might be better off if there wasn't such a "face" in Thailand to have a Caucasian teacher... That is, there are plenty of actually qualified Fillipinos who get turned away on account of their skin color. Accent? Thai will have a Thai accent anyway. Why does it have to be perfect? Nobody is learning English to become a spy anyhow. Though I would speculate that it is the advanced Western teaching methodologies that will take the dinosaur of Thai education anywhere, if it can go anywhere. The system here is in bad shape. But basically, to answer your question, not all but so many of these men of all different ages and backgrounds have something in common. They met a girl on a holiday and couldn't get her out of their head. They abandoned whatever career they had back home (they are bankers, engineers, graphic artists, concrete laborers, or they may not have even had a career) and came here to live with her. They may have broken up after a month of such an illusion and the guy keeps on partying. He may get other girlfriends, or a wife, later. He often disentegrates in confusion and alcohol excess. Sometimes, after a couple years, he goes back to his country, with girl or without. Sometimes he goes to another place to teach first. Relatively very few of them have actually come here just for the job. They took up teaching as a means to stay here. Many maintain their sense of responsibility and do a good job. Fascinating people. They are learning about life. These are educated or responsible people. Decent people. Some of these may even be retired teachers or retired from other positions of responsibility. They usually get a better perspective on everything more quickly. They have a better time and do the "Farang" reputation well. A few of them had even met their Thai wife in their own country when she was a student or working there. Maybe they're here for a new life experience in a foreign land. That's a different kettle of fish. Anyone who came here with an intentional plan probably does better in the long run... But yes, some others have lost the plot and are whiners or drift from job to job. Conclusions: a warm pussy is worth the low money and the madness. It takes a long time to get perspective when the loneliness of a Western life is suddenly cracked open by a warm exotic pussy. Human nature is at once crude, pitiful and full of subjective glories. Many are the men who went for it, impulsively... Many are the men who perished... Fewer are those who succeed in raw efforts and become more than they were. Freedom is either a wide range of challenges that encourages one to fulfill themselves attaining... Or it's heavier than a mountain and can push a man's mind, face to face with his whole self nakedly before him for the first time thrust out of familiar surroundings, into desperate actions; and one is crushed by it.

To live in Thailand you need to budget. I do it on about 35000 bhat a month. I teach at a Rajabhat and a little corporate on the side. My House on campus is costing me 4000 bhat a month. My medication about 1500, cable 2000, laundry about 1000. 8500Bhat total. A meal and a movie every weekend (another 4000 a month for me and a couple of nights out with my girlfriend. 8000 for a night out in Bangkok (20,500 so far) about 4000 a week on food and beer for a grand total of 36500. Anything else in put into savings. Of course I am living about 15 kilometers north of Future Park. If you enjoy Thai food and can cook for yourself then it can be done. I am living comfortably on about a $1000 a month and enjoy life here. If I am not working I watch TV, Read or get on the internet. A couple of small beers near my house charge 70 Baht for a beer (the large ones). None of the bars outside of Bangkok sell the smaller beers. If you want simpler lifestyle then Thailand is the place to be. If not then maybe you should go home to a place you are obviously content with. I don't see myself ever living again in the west. In the west the women have forgotten how to be feminine. In Thailand they still enjoy being women.

Wow! What can I say, but thank you to all who have shared their wisdom and experience! I appreciate the time youve spent typing away greatly! Just to give you some idea of my background, I have been teaching english for a year and a half here in japan, so I dont feel that by jumping on the next plane to LOS because I had a great holiday there, automatically puts me in the category of person that just wants to teach English as a means to f*** around in Thailand. I would be lying however, if I said that the girls weren't a part of the reason for moving. I enjoy what I do here in Japan and get a great deal of satisfaction out of giving to others, rather than striving to make money for its own right. After my holiday to LOS I have thought about moving to teach in Thailand because it would be a fairly natural move for me as it's what i'm doing now, and I think would give me more things to enjoy than here in Japan. For example where I live in Japan there are no farang restaurants; so no fry-ups, no foreign newspapers to read, there's only one pub, no foreign music, no foreign sports... the list goes on. Don't get me wrong i've had a great experience here, but the lack of foreign exposure can drive you crazy sometimes. Everything is just centred around whats going on in Japan. After visiting Thailand I feel it has a good mix for the foreigner who's living in the country (its probably not great for thai culture to have too much foreign crap coming in though). I was amazed in Thailand at how much western stuff was around, and it excited me. I don't want to live in the UK at all, but sometimes it's nice to see what's going on on TV or in the news, and then think "thank f*** i'm not there anymore" and get back to my life in asia. Also,i fully understand that Thai teachers would have issues with farang earning more than them, but surely it's an important fact that they can make their money go a hell of a lot further than we can and probably don't have to deal with other Thai people constantly trying to charge a higher price for things like farang have to deal with? I could be wrong though - just a thought.

As Dagul suggested, Come to Korea to teach English. Korea is an English crazy country that you can get much money (2,000$ ~ 3,000$ per month) with free accomotion. Koreans are crazy and idiot to pay that huge money only for Eng. Also you can have very small number of classes in a week. The benefit is you can have long-term holiday for your BKK shagging life 2 or 3 times a year as well.. only 5 hour flight time with cheaper flight ticket than the U.S.. Almost all language institute want to hire qualified Eng teachers but could not find that many qualitified teachers so even if you don't have eng. teaching background or eng. degree you can get a job easily. The only matter is your payment which is guaranteed at least $1,500 ~ $2,000 with free accomodation. Thus, you can get a part-time teaching class for $40~ per hour if you get popular as a good teacher.
