the letter of residency can be done by your employer or even by your landlord

I didn't even need one when I got my 5 year license

but there is a form at Immigration to declare your home/residence, that has to either be filled in by your employer, or signed by your landlord at Immigration's office, and if I remember correctly was free of charge

sounds like you got the high-hard one from whoever told you to go to the Embassy

LY,

They definitely wanted the letter of residency, because I held it back just to see. However, I didn't realise it could be from my employer. Have to remember that if I'm still here in 5 years!

I found a useful trick in getting residency letters from your Embassy. Esp useful as you need one every year for work permit renewal.

The cost of one letter is Bt1700 from British Embassy. But I asked the bloke (he was English) if he could sign 5 letters and leave the date blank.

No problem he said. So I have 5 residency letters for the cost of one and I just fill in the date when I need to use it.

The fellas here who get behind the wheel in Bangkok deserve two purple hearts, as far as I am concerned. It sure takes some guts.

Goldenstar,, what do you find so threatening about driving in LOS???
I drove from BKK to Nong Khai without any problems.
I often zip around Om Noi ( outskirts of BKK ) on a borrowed motor bike and do same in Isaan, and the various islands I holiday on.
The only frightening things I have seen are usually done by Farangs,,,
but THE most frightening thing I saw was a FAT Farang women on a bike,,, was sure that bike gonna dissapear up her twat.

Yurune,,, The Thais just have a different method,, seems like craziness until you get used to it. They have very few rules re. lane changing etc but at least have co-operation. Here in Aus if you wanted to change lanes and someone else is there they will simply allow a smash as you have broken the rules !!! We have learnt to drive by strict rules,,, whereas in Thailand the guy in the other lane will moove a bit right and the guy beside him will moove a little and all works well as long as you get the Thai idea that those white stripes on the road have NO MEANING,,,,same same for traffic lights etc, but the co-operation bit works.

P.S I have written a letter to Thaksin suggesting the Thai economy could save millions of dollars by not bothering with those funny white lines.

Talking of which, the road markings that in the civilized world we call zebra crossings seem to have only one purpose in Thailand, that is a bus stop.

Take for example the ones on second road in Pattaya, it is rare that anybody will stop except Baht Busses, they slow down stopping just past the crossing, peep there horns thinking you want a ride even waving them past to no avail, all they do is make it more difficult to cross the road.

Even if some kind driver slows down you run the risk of being run down by motor cycles who just wiz round either side of any slowing or stationary vehicle, here in the UK we have zig-zag lines for 25M both sides of a crossing where it is an offence to stop or overtake.

Mel, in reply to your comment I see only one reason for road markings in Thailand and that is if the people who paint them did not do it they would be unemployed.

P.S. If you do not know what a Zebra crossing looks like find a copy of the Beatles, Abbey Road album or visit this site http://www.2pass.co.uk/crossing.htm.

Quick question, my Thai work permit contains my Thai residence address (in Thai) is this sufficient proof of address/residency, I see previous posters with work permits also providing embassy letters ?
Thx, M
