Koreans are crazy and idiot to pay that huge money only for Eng.

No harm intended; I've never been to Korea and I'm sure it's wonderful. But if this attitude is shared, perhaps it is why there seems to be so many Western teachers come back from Korea saying, "We were needed, but not wanted."

Whereas here in Thailand what can they say, "We are crazy to accept so little money... Craaazyyy, crazzzyyy for looovin yoouu..."

I also heard that there is a lot of schools that f*** you over in Korea.

For example, they fire you just before the end of your contract so they don't have to pay you end-of-contract bonuses etc that were stated at the start.

Legit ones?

Depends on how you think.

There are girs who are crazy about western people and you can easily hook them up at some bars.
They are also beautiful.

There are also many FLs who you can easily pick up with some money.

If you want to enjoy in Korea PM me. I will let you know.

A Korean friend, or at least good advice from one, would probably make a lot of difference.

I might be wrong but this is what I saw for many years and heard from lots of students.

That feeling you were referring to came from their attitude.

About ten years ago, I also attended many Eng. classes to brush up my English before studying in England.

At that time, most of the Eng teachers were so good to be friends and they were open-minded with high intelligency.

Nowadays, I sometimes go to places such as itaewon where many American soliders and Eng.teachers hang out. In Itaewon, I met many Eng. teachers. Also, my collegues have private Eng. classes by paying huge money ($40~55 per hour or even more).

There are good teachers with passion to make their students improve their eng. proficiency. But, you know always few bad people ruins everything. Bad teachers with bad attitude with no passion are out there a lot and they lose their reputation and decay koreans' good intention to be good freinds with Eng. teachers.

To make it short, yes you are right. Eng. teachers are needed but good Eng. teachers also are wanted because Koreans want to be friends of them.

So the important point is whether you behave in a right way or not. you open your heart then you will receive warm welcome with all heart.

Back to the point, money, benefits, and working env. are all very good. This is why you should come to Korea.

I also heard that few times but not common in Korea.

This is dark side which happens to about 1% of Eng. teachers. so don't look or hear this story. This won't happen to you.

This is important in each country and it would be good if all emissaries, such as English teachers, paid attention to it and respected it. Thanks for your message.

leeroy: I think I've heard worse stories out of China. But stories are stories...
who knows? The whiners usually complain the most.

The Thai educational system is an enormous joke. Just subtract 5 years off the average student maturity and educational level from what it would be from the west. 15-18 year old kids here are probably only getting the same quality of education that a kid would get in middle school (grade 6-8) in the west.

One of the things you need to take into consideration before embarking on a teaching profession here is the difference in the level and attitude toward education here in Thailand. It is definitely NOT the same as in a western society and, I daresay, not the same as in Japan or Korea.
School is seen here as more of a pastime to keep children occupied than as a means to equip them with knowledge to use in later years and as a stepping-stone to university (which is also a joke, so I am told). Most "education" takes the form of copying large chunks of text from the board or from books. There is no such thing as homework as we know it, in fact children rarely even take books home with them each night.
It is also important to understand the role of the farang English teacher and what is expected of them, as opposed to the Thai English teachers. The farang English teacher is (for some obscure reason) expected to "entertain" the children and make learning English fun and easy by playing games, singing songs and conducting other activities. It seems that the Thai English teachers job is to concentrate on teaching grammar and vocabulary while the farang is supposed to reinforce what has been taught in a fun and interesting way.
Many schools do not like a farang to use any Thai in class, too - even if it helps speed up a lesson. Some places insist on 100% spoken English.
So I think there is more to think about than just money when you teach English. I have learnt more from teaching than I ever did in my TEFL course and the disappointing Thai education system and the Thai-based attitude of the children are the main reasons why I have decided to never teach English here again.
Cheers,

Whisper.

Regarding children Eng. studying I think it is about the same in Korea.

The purpose is to make children be familiar with Eng. and not get scared when they meet native speakers.

The reason why they force you not to speak local language is for students.

Yes, I agree with you that by using local language you can help their understanding and may speed up your instructions.

However, when you speak the local language the students in ur class start/want to use local language when they confront some language difficulties such as questions or anything.
