Shit, I hate to say it, but I am on Dushas side, nothing wrong with a few good manners from someone, mamasan or not. These people do not realise that by doing that, the business may have lost a customer forever, but by simply saying 'she has gone to work elsewhere' instead of lying, the customer would go back to that bar no ploblem.
Common curtuosy and good manners are lacking here big time, true judged on western standards, but never the less, business is business and every business wants there customers to come back.
I dont see how you can call him 'the ugly american' for that, he did not yell or scream at the mamasan from what I read, he just decided to leave.
I know he reserves the 'ugly american' act for special people.

I agree with you on the topic that Common curtesey and good manners are lacking here, like not calling someone up when they plan not to show, but trying to teach these concepts here are like talking to a wall. Better to have plan B, but plan B was not all that, so time to look for plan C.
MN you and BigDUSA are agreeing more than not, drinking buddies for this Friday's RT since I am on the wagon.

Consider one thought: Comon courtesy and good manners are probably lacking big time from most of their clientelé, by their opinion - so, after a while, they might just not give a crap if they are honest or not.
The one customer may not come back, but 5 more walk in from the next bus-load of punters. At their scale, they don't need to provide customer service.
On the other side of that coin, you have places like Veronica 'Elite', which (it appears) is now scrambling for customers, as they have belted themselves out of business... 
Just try to see the other side of the coin - or, in a valid comparison, hang out in a more or less seedy (or, even high-class) strip-club in L.A., or Vegas, and you are most likely about to get the same level of honesty and customer service.
Just some food for thought.
