Caronte has chosen a good path.
I also work for a large intl company whilst my wife handles our company. Best of both worlds, a monthly salary, capital offshore and something local to keep the wife busy and as a fallback.
Thailand is an easier place than many imagine as:
1. You do not have to follow the rules, where there is a rule there is a way around it.
2. The more audacious you are the better
3. You hire people to handle the bullsh_t red tape at little cost but no one really reads most of the submissions you make, it is easy to comply
4. There is a support network here in the Chambers of commerce etc. but it must be said the best supported are Brits, Japanese and Germans.
5. Americans have had trade privilidges for many decades but do not seem to own that many businesses here.
The drawbacks are:
1. The economy is only just recovering.
2. The tourist trade is good for customers with money to burn but they are either very difficult (Germans) stingy (backpackers) or wonderfully generous and easygoing (Scandinavians and Brits)
3. You never live here, you only have a long term visa.
4. Thailand can be unpredictable and long term investment here carries a risk weighting, particulalrly in land.
5. You can work 18 hours a day.
6. Thai workers are great to know but lazy as sh_t. this is not a generalisation but as they are paid peanuts I have some
