WTF ? I told you guys already that your employer can make the letter for you usually your employer should take care of this issue for you entirely once you have a license, you do NOT need to have the letter again when renewing the license, unless you are changing address i.e., mine is registered in Chonburi, but I am far from there now, so probably get my employer to write me a residence letter when I get my new renewal in 3 years time and NO that address on your work permit is NOT good enough and I wrote similar letter to Taksin as Mel, but I suggested they could save heaps by just not installing those pesky turn signal lights that no one seems to use oh, and they could also air condition the Earth by just taking off those unsightful doors on the shopping malls that no one closes behind them

You don't need letter from employer. But you will need house papers. If you are renting someplace you can get the papers from you landlord. been there done that.

Do I need an international drivers licence to be able to hire a scooter in the likes of Phuket or Samui? Or can I get away with my farang licence?

I don't think the guys hiring out those motos really give a shite whether you've got a license or not, the only thing they want is ID for tracking you down if you do a runner

Tezza, LY has a point, how would car/moterbike rental places make any money requiring a Thai DL??? as far as the topic "living here" is concerned...I lived/worked in Phuket and rented a car with insurance and both were covered my Thai employer and never had an issue... *edit in* I did have a valid US DL.. atl

Tezza: I usually rent cars with an International Driving License and a Saudi Driver's license. I have rented motorbikes for my daughter showing only my passport and giving them a copy. No license required. All of this in Pattaya or Udorn. Never in Phuket. DO NOT leave your original passport with them.

I have been renting cars/scooters in Thailand for the past 12 years.... not once have I been asked for license.... as mentioned, they just need ID so they can track you. Funny thing is... that 2 hours ago... I have had a f***ing crash (in Phuket) !! Be interesting to see what happens - am waiting for insurance company to inspect cars and scene of accident - as usual too many morons walking around thinking they are experts in road safety. Still have not been asked for license !!
