It's been interesting reading this thread. I originally came to Thailand for other business ventures but ended up teaching to remain legal and to earn a steady income. Let me tell you if you live a relatively clean (ie. non alcoholic and healthy eating) lifestyle then you can easily get by on 30k baht a month like I do. Hell, I even have money at the end of the month saved up. It's not hard to do if you look at what you're spending money on and cut out a lot of the b.s. expenses. The amazing thing is I eat out all the time with my girlfriend at decent restaurants and i'm still able to budget. Every couple months or so I go on a weekend trip somewhere nice. It's not hard at all but it's definitely not for everyone especially if you're a bar or Massage parlor addict. Teaching in Thailand is a joke i've seen this job crush dedicated people like non other. It seems like the long term teachers are the ones who have significant others in Thailand and have stable personalities. At times it's the most frustrating thing ever because Thais live in their own carefully constructed titanium cage of ignorance. Education, knowledge, and common sense just isn't valued in this country. After awhile you just have to go with the flow and say Mai pen rai because anything else will drive you nuts. You also have to realize that the primary role of foreign teachers is to act like a whitefaced clown. As long as you keep this in mind the day passes by quickly.

As long as you can show up to class relatively sober, sing lame songs, or do a shuck and jive i'm sure you would be hired.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 16 January 2007 :- Hiring foreign teachers 'should be made easier' =================================== The International Schools Association of Thailand (Isat) has called on the government to relax the rules on the recruitment of foreign teachers, saying strict criminal background checks of applicants was making it extremely difficult for schools to recruit foreign staff. Education Minister Wijit Srisa-arn said Isat representatives recently met him to air international schools' problems regarding the tough recruitment criteria. They claimed the requirement for international schools to thoroughly check the criminal records of applicants before recruiting them was impractical. The process was not only time-consuming but was also creating other problems, they said. The association called on the ministry to raise the matter with the Foreign Ministry's Consular Affairs Department, to help cut red tape regarding the criminal background checks. The association also urged the department to invite Interpol to jointly conduct the checks with Thai police. Mr Wijit said the Isat proposed that a one-stop service centre be set up to facilitate the hiring of foreign teachers by international schools. Currently, the schools need to deal with several state agencies before a work permit can be issued to a foreign teacher. The association also called for the inclusion of a clause into a private school draft bill to put international schools under the control of the Office of the Private Education Commission, like other private schools.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 17 January 2007 :- Briton faces extradition on rape charge ============================= A former truck driver who reportedly fled a child rape charge in England before taking up a teaching job in Bangkok has been arrested and is facing extradition to Britain. Sean McMahon, 45, was arrested at an apartment in AP Tower, in the Phahon Yothin area. Crime Suppression Division police said he is awaiting extradition to stand trial in Britain on child sex abuse charges. Mr McMahon is accused of raping an eight-year-old girl several times between Jan 1, 1997 and Sept 30, 1998 in Torquay, Devon. He was arrested and charged, but jumped bail and fled to Thailand in 2003, police said. Mr McMahon had said that after entering Thailand he made a living as an English teacher in at least three international schools in Thailand. Before his arrest yesterday, Mr McMahon was teaching at a school on the outskirts of Bangkok, police said.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 17 January 2007 :- Two held with fake qualifications ======================== Briton Allan Parson (centre) and Greg Morgan Mercer (left), a Canadian national, at a press conference after the Police Immigration Bureau arrested them on charges of falsifying their education qualifications. They were taken into custody yesterday at a private school in the Bang Khun Thian area where they had been employed to teach English. — TAWATCHAI KEMGUMNERD Two foreign nationals have been arrested for using fake qualification certificates to teach at a Bangkok school. Officers from the Immigration Police Bureau (IPB) apprehended Briton Allan Parson and Canadian Greg Morgan Mercer yesterday at a school in the Bang Khun Thian area where they were employed as English teachers. They did not possess the required teaching qualifications, Lt-Gen Suwat Tumrongsiskul, the IPB commissioner, said. ''Although the suspects said they didn't intend to deceive anybody and just wanted to teach Thais language skills, the fact remains that they have violated the law,'' said Pol Lt-Gen Suwat. Last year alone, 6,807 foreign nationals applied for a visa to teach in Thailand, he said. Random background checks on 1,000 of them found that 65 produced false certificates to obtain their jobs. They were now being prosecuted. He said some of them insisted they genuinely wanted to teach while others wanted to benefit from the long stay of up to one year afforded by the teaching visa. Lt-Gen Suwat also said it was hard to screen out criminals on the run at the point of entry because most were not on any blacklist. The Education Ministry would be asked to assist in verifying the qualifications of foreign teachers.

Report from The Nation dated Monday 5 February 2007 :- Efficient English looking overseas ======================== Efficient English Services, a franchisee of Wall Street Institute (WSI) school of English in Thailand, expects to spread its wings into 5 countries in Asia within 3 years, starting with Indonesia in the next 2 weeks. Malaysia, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Japan are in its plans after that, according to director Michel Le Quellec. The company bought the WSI master franchise from its United States headquarters to launch its Indonesia branch with a US$800,000 (Bt28.6 million) investment. Le Quellec said the company would enter Malaysia after its business in Indonesia was established, which was expected to take 3 months. It is also negotiating with a master franchisee in Hong Kong to let the company operate there, which would automatically allow it to do business in Japan because the Hong Kong operator also has an operation there. Le Quellec said the demand from Asian people to study English was very high, even in Japan, because of globalisation and the growth of the Internet. He said those countries already had many private English institutes and the market seemed to be tougher than in Thailand, though the higher demand for studying English and big populations provided the company with an opening. Above all, none of the institutes teach English in the same way as WSI, he added. In terms of its business plan for Thailand, Le Quellec said the company planned to open new branches at Siam Centre and in Pinklao. Le Quellec said the Siam Square area was a big potential market because of its popularity with teenagers and Pinklao could become a significant market because there were not many private English institutes on the outskirts of Bangkok. Efficient English Services has been in Thailand since 2002 and has 6 mini-branches in major companies and 3 full-sized branches in Bangkok. Le Quellec said the company would like to open branches in major provinces nationwide in the long term.
