I think Larry might as well go to the trouble of getting a real visa instead of VOA

the idea was that they weren't goign to let people make more than 3 back to back VOAs either, and Larry well exceeded that

Like Larry, I come and go frequently into Thailand on Business, I noticed on the last trip in that they carefully counted up the days of my past few trips. Be interesting when I get close to the limit or if there maths are poor!

LY, no the trips were not back-to-back. There was at least 3 weeks between each visit. And each visit was on ly 1 - 4 days. It seems that when I entered, the Immigration guys were too lazy to count and just assumed as I had a lot of stamps I have spent a lot of days in LOS.

When I left, the next day, and they counted up properly they agreed that I didn't need a visa (but wouldn't admit they had made a mistake). Why should I need a visa when I have only spent 19 days out of the last 6 months in LOS?

those are back to back VOAs to them, which is what they do not want

they expect you to get a tourist visa at an Embassy or Consulate before you arrive, if you are in fact coming here often you should be prepared with the proper visa

I don’t think the real issue was related to back-to-back VOA. The main focus as I understand it is targeted at those who where/are basically living in LOS with only VOA’s and not related in any fashion to the number of trips only to the number of days.

If you look at the brochure from Thai immigration and even the official notice from Thai immigration there is no mention of limits to the number of VOA's only limits to the total number of days using VOA.

Brochure:
http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/2notice/newpro.html

Order from Thai immigration

3. According the Article 13 (3) of the Ministerial Regulation which stipulated the criterions, practices and conditions regarding the verification, exception and the changes in the visa requirements B.E. 2545 (2002) dated on 16th August B.E. 2545 (2002), within six months period, the holder of passport or substitutive documents which issued by any country that is approved by the Minister of the Interior, under the approval of the Cabinet, to enter to temporarily stay in Thailand for tourism purpose, shall be permitted to enter Thailand several times. Each permitted time shall not be exceeding 30 days period, and the total period shall not be exceeding 90 days from the first day that the passport holder arrived in Thailand.

The official order even states: “The holder of a passport ….. stay in Thailand for tourism purpose, shall be permitted to enter Thailand several times”

On the other hand Larry says he is visiting for business so in reality he should be getting a business visa and not traveling on a VOA anyway.

One of the benifits of the VOA is promoting tourism and allowing people from the approved countries to visit LOS without the hassle of getting a visa at an embassy. The VOA is the proper visa for those not wanting to stay more than 30 days in one stay or more than 90 days out of 180 - regardless of the number of trips they make.

Since I spend more of my time whoring than working it is debatable whether my visits are tourism or business. Nobody gets a business visa for short trips to Asian countries. I have been going all over Asia for more than 30 years now without any problem.

The point is, when the Immigration officials looked closely at the number of days I had stayed during my departure they agreed that I did not need a visa (and I was open that I visit on business). Their interpretation was the same as IBF's above (and mine, and the brochure). However, having written "last time" on my entry stamp, am I now going to have to go through the hassle of being pulled aside and spending 20 minutes going through all my stamps with a calculator every time I enter the Kingdom? My question was whether this has happened to anyone else? Apparently not.

Last time I was in LOS the immigration officer paged through my passport and counted up the total number of days I had spent in LOS based on the stamps. It took a while but as I never do more than 90 days in 6 months I figured I was OK.

I know a lot of others have experienced this sort of thing

many were given 7-day visas upon arrival back from a Cambo border run after they had stayed for 90 days on VOAs, and were told to go to an Embassy or Consulate and get a proper visa

you don't want the hassle, get a proper visa, that is all

You're still missing the point. I had stayed for 19 days, not 90. Immigration said it was not a problem when they looked at it properly. The point is, they were too lazy to count when I entered the country, and I now have a marker in my passport.

I don't need a "proper" visa according to Immigration (who should know). I will report my experience next month.

try telling that to mr. immigration

it's up to the officer at the time what flies

and they are down on VOAs, especially a bunch of them back to back

yes, they're lazy, but they are still in charge, so maybe you should avoid yourself a lot of bullshit and just get a f***in' visa like most people do who want to travel to a country repeatedly
